THE FAMILY OF
DAVID BENTLEY, CORNWALLIS GRANTEE

David Bentley, son of William and Mary (Eliot) Bentley, was bapt. June 21, 1724 in the First Church of Lebanaon, CT and married December 1, 1748, in Lebanon, Ann Baldwin, daughter of Thomas and Ann (Bingham) Baldwin. Ann was born February 3, 1730/1.

In May of 1754, David purchased land in Norwich, CT, where he remained until 1760 when he sold his land to his father-in-law, Thomas Baldwin, and emigrated to Nova Scotia.

David, like so many other younger sons of large families, saw the advertisment from Nova Scotia that settlers were wanted to settle in part of Nova Scotia from which the Acadians had been expelled. They would receive land grants from the government if they would pledge allegiance to the crown.

In 1761, David came to Kings County, with his wife, Ann and four children and a number of other families to settle the fertile valley. David was one of those assigned to assess the land granted to many of the New England Planters and his signature appears on many of the grants. He received a grant of 1 share of 666 2/3 acres in the first division. The main part of his shares were at Sheffield Mills and north of Billtown, but he did have a piece of land at Town Plot. David signed many of the grants "Bentlee".
