Steve's Sign

The young mother stood at the graveside

Of  her precious son lost for all time.

The depth of her grief overpowering,

She asked him to give her a sign.

“ Son, if you only could tell me,

If in some way you could help me know

That you are all right in your new home,

Then maybe somehow I’ll go on. “

She felt somehow foolish for asking

This small child so recently gone

For mystical signs of assurance,

And she sadly returned to her home.

She almost could have missed it,

That wonderful gift from above.

But another who loved her completely

Showed her the sign of her baby’s love.

For over the top of her chimney,

After only a sprinkle of rain

In a burst of celestial beauty

A single rainbow came.

The rainbow ran over her hometown

And, only a short distance away

Was the end of the rainbow directly

Over the spot where her dear baby lay.

He knew she was desperate without him.

He loved her too much to ignore

The plea she had made at his graveside

And he reached out to touch her once more.

Sometimes we do not notice

In our everyday struggle to live

How much our loved ones matter;

How much they have to give.

So, if ever you happen to see one

After rain in the heavens above,

Say a prayer for the heart of this mother

And give thanks for the sign of  Steve’s love.
