Why Programs Should be Allowed in Class
While there are many reasons to outlaw programs, you also have to look at the benefits. Programs are good for the class because:
They let teachers get past the review problems in a book .
They give teachers a chance to offer projects or extra credit (create a program).
They give a chance to budding programmers that might not otherwise find out about computer engineering.
They are not cheating if programmed by the user, because you have to know how to solve the problem well to be able to make a program for it.
Our teacher allows them. (I know that isn't a good reason, but I had to add it in there)
They give the teachers the chance to wade past the problems that just require a lot of work and get to the problems that students actually have trouble with.
Now, in a normal school, you would not expect for the programs to make much difference or for the students to take the programs for granted and get laid back in their learning. But our class of Precalculus Honors took a two year precalculus book (Saxon Advanced Mathematics) and finished it in one year, finishing over one hundred of the lessons (only about 110)). So the programs made a big difference in our class. What About Yours?
