Canadian Radio Sailor of
2001
By Peter Van Rossem
Dick Stanford of Kingston Yacht
Club, has been named Canadian Radio Sailor of 2001. As his nominator for
the award, I would say that most RC skippers can only be envious of
Dick's sailing accomplishments.
Dick Stanford, 2001 Sailor of the year shows his drive to participate in
all regattas in three different fleets over the years including
2001.
Dick has been a dedicated fleet captain for the Kingston IOM and
Marblehead fleets for over 6 consecutive years. In 2001, Dick sailed his
RC boats from April to December and from Kingston to Croatia. Most RC
skippers can only be envious of Dicks sailing accomplishments which
include sailing RC Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays each and every week
and any weekend regatta there might take place. The impressive list
of regattas Dick participated in, in the 2001 season, are as follows:
-
Canadian
Marblehead Championships, TORONTO
-
IOM Worlds,
CROATIA
-
Eastern US IOM
Championships , CONNECTICUT IOM CORK Championships , KINGSTON
-
US National IOM
Championships, NEW YORK CITY
-
Canadian IOM
Championships, VANCOUVER
To Dick’s credit, he organized Kingston's Annual Match Racing Event
which attracts skippers from as far away as Connecticut. Dick has also
skippered Kingston's Rescue boat for the Soling One Meter Fleet, IOM
Fleet and Marblehead Fleet for the last six years that he has been fleet
captain. This I can attest to can be difficult to operate due to the
rough conditions Kingston's South West breeze delivers. As recipient of
The 2001 RC "Sailor" of the Year, Dick beats all for
commitment, dedication, moral and most of all, time on the sticks.
Congratulations Dick from all of us in the CRYA!
