They used to be punk-rockers in the 1980s, you know.
Nowadays, though, Soul
Asylum have mellowed like their Minneapolis compatriots in
The Replacements
did -- the songs don't elicit the same old adrenaline rush,
but they're too
well-written and personal to be dismissed. In Soul Asylum's
case, the
acoustic guitars are more prominent, country influences are
creeping in and
the electric guitars don't roar like they did, but Dave
Pirner's voice still
has that pleasing raggedness and his writing is touched with
just enough anger
