D.A.R.E. WILL REACH 36 MILLION CHILDREN
WITH DRUG AND VIOLENCE RESISTANCE SKILLS IN 2001 & 2002

The Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program is the largest drug prevention, drug
education, life skills program of its kind in the world today. The D.A.R.E.
Program began as a cooperative effort between the Los Angeles, California Police
Department and the Los Angeles, California Unified School District in 1983.
The Program was initially piloted in 10 elementary schools by 10 uniformed
police officers in Los Angeles, California in 1983. The Program was
originally established to teach young people resistance techniques to avoid the
pressures to begin using drugs and the skills to respect themselves as well as
others. The D.A.R.E. Program contains a curriculum for elementary, middle,
high school students as well as a parent component. The D.A.R.E. lessons
focus on four major areas:
 | Providing accurate information about tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs
 | Teaching students decision making skills
 | Showing students how to resist peer pressure and to deal with conflicts
nonviolently
 | Giving students ideas for alternatives to violence and drug use |
