'The Conqueror' (1956) - While 'Jet Pilot', 'Tycoon', and 'The Greatest Story Ever Told' are all deserving, the nearly unanimous choice as Duke's worst feature film is this unintentionally funny, implausable Mongolian epic, with his bizarre casting as Temujin/Genghis Khan...Produced by Howard Hughes (which explains a lot), directed by Dick Powell (the gifted actor/singer/director, whose decisions were usually vetoed by Hughes), shot in the radiation-drenched atomic testing range in Utah (with most of the cast and crew eventually dying of cancer)...this turkey has something to stupefy even the most devoted Duke fan! If Mexican Pedro Armendariz and short, roly-poly William ('Cannon') Conrad as Duke's brothers doesn't do it, Susan Hayward's 'over-the-top' performance as history's least-believable redheaded Mongolian princess, in her low-cut gowns, will...plus, you get to hear the Duke, in a Fu Manchu mustache and a midwest drawl, snarl out these immortal words: "Come and take me, mongrels...if you dare! While I have fingers to grasp a sword, and eyes to see your cowardly faces, your treacherous heads will not be safe on your shoulders. For I am Temujin, the Conqueror! No prison can hold me, no army defeat me!"
Fortunately, this film didn't 'end' John Wayne's career...although he would be kidded about it, by friends and enemies, for the rest of his life!
