I've been reading the TO&E for the "New" 3d. Infantry Division and
for the first time the Calvary Sqdn. has become a maneuver unit on a
par to both Armor and Mech. Infanty at the Brigade level.. The new
ground brigades of the 3ID have Sqdns. from 6th. and 7th. Cav. in
Sqdn. size along with Nech. Infantry and Armor Battalions.
The Cavalry as such has been part of the U.S. Army for 144 years
(before the Civil War Cavalry fought as "Dragons" or
mounted/dismounted Infantry) but fought as either Infantry (as in
1st. Cav. Div. in WWII, Korea and Vietnam) or as Armor Regt's. The
current war in Iraq saw for the first time two Cavalry Regiments
fight in the same theatre of war.
The first deployment of a pure unattached Cavalry was the 11th. in
1966 to Vietnam, the second was the 2d. Cav. in Gulf War I in 1990.
In both wars the Cavalry served with destiction and Valor. That said
the combained arms of the Cavalry have gone largly under used by the
U.S. Army. Now as an equal partners in the new Brigade Ground Combat
Teams, the Heavy Cavalry can show the Army what it can do.
The spirits of J.E.B. Stewart and George Custer are looking down on
the U.S. Cavalry with big sh-- eattin' grins on their faces. Now it's
up to you guys now serving to make new tradutions.
