Cavalier Consort

Cavalier Consort was formed in 1994 and specializes in the performance of instrumental music of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. This period instrument ensemble is composed of instruments from diverse groups and includes lute, theorbo, viola da gamba, cittern, baroque violin, baroque guitar, and recorders. The members of the Cavalier Consort are very active in the field of early music and often perform with other groups and as soloists. Because of the groups special interest in Virginia history, they have often performed at historic sites such as the Lynnhaven House, Francis Land House, Adam Thoroughgood House, Historic St. Luke's Church, Bruton Parish Church, and the Wren Building in Colonial Williamsburg. The Cavalier Consort is based in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, and presents a concert series there each year. They are also the ensemble-in-residence at Chowan College in Murfreesboro, North Carolina.

MEMBERS

Charles Hillen graduated from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 1990 with a Master's degree in Music Performance and has been playing recorders since 1980. He has performed with the Virginia Choral Society, Virginia Wesleyan College's Schola Cantorum, and Old Dominion University's Collegium Musicum. Charles has been an active participant in early music development in Hampton Roads and currently serves as a board member of the Hampton Roads Early Music Society and teaches recorder for Old Dominion University's Community Music Academy. In addition, Charles studies baroque flute with Amy Laura Edmondson and began performing flute with Cavalier Consort in the 2000-2001 season.

Linda Murphy holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music History from Old Dominion University. In addition to performing baroque music with the Cavalier Consort, she frequently performs on the classical guitar with her husband Michael and with flutist Kathy Daniels. Linda is also the church pianist for Lake Drummond Baptist Church. A popular guitar and piano teacher, Linda has taught for the Community Music Academy of Old Dominion University and for the Governor's Magnet School for the Arts. A talented multi-instrumentalist, Linda also plays cittern, and baroque guitar.

Michael Murphy, guitarist and lutenist, holds a Master of Music Degree in Guitar Performance from Virginia Commonwealth University. He is a founding member of the Cavalier Consort. He has performed with Capriole, The Governor's Musick of Colonial Williamsburg and has appeared on the concert seasons of the Tidewater Classic Guitar Society and the Richmond Guitar Society. Mr. Murphy has taught for Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia Union University. He is now guitar instructor for Old Dominion University, Tidewater Community College and Chowan College, and has recently been accepted into Shenandoah College's doctoral program in Musicology.

REGULAR GUEST PERFORMERS

Sarah Glosson graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from The College of William and Mary where she performed with the Early Music Ensemble and was principle cellist of the orchestra. She has studied at Italy's Orvieto Musica, Oberlin's Baroque Performance Institute, and with Phoebe Carrai at the Amherst Early Music Festival. Since 1996, she has studied viola da gamba with Wayne Moss. Currently she performs on cello and viola da gamba with the Governor's Musick in Colonial Williamsburg.

Annie Loud, baroque violinist, holds a degree in music performance from Converse College. She has spent a considerable portion of her career specializing in Baroque performance practice and early music performance, having studied with Jaap Schroeder and Stanley Ritchie. She is a member of The Governor's Musick at Colonial Williamsburg and performs regularly with Capriole, the ensemble in residence at Old Dominion University. She also maintains a busy teaching schedule with studios in Chesapeake and Williamsburg. She is now Artist-in-Residence violin instructor for Chowan College.
