Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King
Tell the children who Martin Luther King was and why we remember his birthday. Talk about friendship and why it is important. Then have the children trace the shape of one of their hands on a piece of construction paper. Help them cut out the traced hands. Tape up all the cut-outs on a wall overlapping them so it looks like they are holding hands. Create a caption to put over the line of hands.......

Make a Doughnut Birthday Cake
You will need a doughnut for each child, a can of icing and some sprinkles. They can
even sing Happy Birthday at snack time with their own 'birthday cake'

Martin Luther King Jr. believed in solving problems peacefully.
Ask the children what they think this means. Relating specific incidences, ask them how they can solve problems peacefully at school, home, and play. After discussing peace, tell the children that certain signs and symbols mean peace. Have two children come up to the front. (Tell the other to watch what these two children are going to do.) Whisper to them to shake hands. After shaking hands discuss what the children did and what it meant. Now have two other children come up. Whisper to them to give each other a hug. Have others watch nd then discuss what happened. Have pictures of other symbols which show peace such as a dove with an olive branch, a white flag....

Olive Branch Game
The children form a circle. One child is chosen to be the dove. The dove goes to the center and closes his eyes. The teacher quietly hands a twig to a child who holds it behind there back. When a signal is given all the children say "Peace". The dove opens his eyes and flies around trying to find the olive branch. When he finds it, he holds it until the new dove (child who had branch) goes to the center and closes his eyes. The old dove gives the branch to a new child. This is continued until everyone has had a turn.

Art - Dove Mobile
Have the children cut out a large, simple white bird from construction paper. Help them cut a slit in the center of each one. Give each child several pieces of white tissue cut in 4"X6" rectangles. Have him fold the tissue paper on the six inch side like a fan. Insert the tissue into the slot on bird. Tape a twig to the beak. Attach a string. The children can make two or three and hang them from a hanger.

Watch the many colors go up together....
In 1986 people in the US celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day for the first time. At that time, many children let helium balloons go up into the sky. Tell the children that they are going to do the same thing. (You may wish to send a note home a few days before the party inviting your parents to participate.) Give each child a helium filled colored balloon to carry outdoors. Have everyone stand together and count to three. When they say "three" they should let their balloons float into the sky.
