Crafts & Activities

Pond Mural
Use a roll of paper and place on floor. Provide crayons, collage materials, glue, scissors, etc and have the children create their own pond environment.

Turtle Puppets
These are really cute! You need a small paper bowl and a green sock. Paint the bowl like a turtle shell. When dry, glue onto the sock leaving enough room at the toe end for the turtle's head. Add felt or googly eyes to the head of the turtle.

Dragon Fly
Dragonflies come in very vibrant colours... the prettiest I have seen this year was a bright ORANGE! Give each child a clothespin (the ones with the rounded head) to paint. Use fun foam shapes (or cut your own) for the wings. Decorate the wings with glitter glue. When both sections are dry, attach the wings to the clothespin. Add small googly eyes to complete. Add a magnet to the back for the fridge if you'd like.

Quacking Duck
This duck craft will make a 'quacking' noise when complete... cute and simple and FUN! Scroll about 1/2 way down the page for the directions.

Science Activity
Water Life Experiment. Fill an aquarium or large container with some pond water. Provide magnifying glasses at the table and let the children explore the life that is present and will seemingly just appear from the still water.

Sensory Activity
Pond Tub. The rubbermaid container that goes under the bed works great for this activity. Place sand in the bottom of the container and cover with water. Add plastic fish, bugs, frogs, and ducks to the 'pond'. Collect some large leaves that can double as lily pads and leave a few floating on top of the water. This will definitely keep the little ones busy exploring and playing for a while :-)

Leap Frog
Children line up and crouch down. Last in the back leaps over the other gently touching their back saying "leap frog leap" until they reach the front and crouch down. Then the next child goes.

Duck, Duck, Goose
Children sit in a circle. One is chosen to walk around the circle touching each child's head saying... duck, duck, duck until they say GOOSE. The 'goose' gets up and runs in the opposite direction and they race to the open spot. A new child is chosen to go.

Visit A Pond
If you are lucky enough to have a pond area in within walking distance, pack up a picnic lunch and go and explore all the wildlife and vegetation surrounding the pond. We are lucky in the fact that although we live in a large city (500,000+ people), I have a man-made lake within walking distance. We often go their and watch the ducks, geese, fish and other creatures of the pond. The children love to collect the tall grasses and bullrushes that grow around the lake.

If you do not have a pond or man-made lake nearby, perhaps a neighbour has a pond in their yard that the children can go and view the life surrounding it. I am also super lucky to have NICE neighbours who have a pond and we have gone over as a group to look at their fish/bugs/waterlilies/etc.

Song - Little White Duck

There's a little white duck
Swimming in the water
A little white duck
Doing what he ought-a
He took a bite of a lily pad
Flapped his wings and he said, "I'm glad
I'm a little white duck swimming in the water.
Quack, quack, quack!"

There's a little green frog
Swimming in the water
A little green frog
Doing what he ought-er
He jumped right off of the lily pad
That the little duck bit and he said, "I知 glad
I知 a little green frog
Swimming in the water.
Ribbet, ribbet, ribbet!"

There's a little black bug
Swimming in the water
A little black bug
Doing what he ought-er
He tickled the frog on the lily pad
That the little duck bit and he said, "I知 glad
I知 a little black bug
Swimming in the water
Blug, blug, blug!"

There's a little red snake
Sneaking through the water
A little red snake
Doing what he ought-er
He frightened the duck and the frog so bad
He ate up the the bug and he said, "I知 glad
I知 a little red snake
Sneaking through the water
Ssss, Ssss, Ssss!"

Now there痴 nobody left
Swimming in the water,
Nobody left doing what they ought-er
There痴 nothing left but the lily pad
The duck and the frog swam away
I知 sad
Now theres nobody left
Swimming in the water.
"Boo, hoo, hoo!"
