Crafts & Activities

Box Train
This craft can be as simple or detailed as you and the children would like it to be. Collect boxes with open tops and some that are closed. Punch a hole at one end of the first box and attach another box to it using wool or string. Add as many cars to the train as the child wishes. Decorate the front car to be the engine. If making passenger cars, children can decorate windows with people looking out or if making freight cars, let each child decide what the different cars will carry. Once completed, add a string to the front and tie to a ring (I use wooden or plastic napking rings that I pick up at garage sales) for pulling. If children want to make a steam engine, you can add an inverted dixie cup and add cotton to the top for the steam.

Clickity Clack Game
This is a game I made up so I hope you like it :-) Children sit in a circle and choose a spot that will be the station. One child is chosen to be the engine of the train and moves around the outside of the circle while you chant...

Clickity Clack, Clickity Clack
I'm a train chugging town the track
There is the station, what do I see
Another boxcar waiting for me.

Another child attaches to the train and you keep going til all children (or a number like 5 children are attached to the engine)
For the last verse, chant...

Clickity clack, Clickity clack
I'm a train chugging down the track
There is the station, what do I see
A red caboose waiting for me!

Math Activities
Number Train - Cut out a train with an engine and 10 box cars. Number the box cars and have an acetate (clear) pocket on each car that children can sort picture cards that match the numbers. Car #1 might be carrying 1 cow, car #2 might be carrying 2 crates, car #3 might be carrying 3 vehicles, etc. Children place the picture cards into the pockets on the Number train.

Sensory Activities
Smell Train - This is a fun activity to do. Set up a train of boxes - each box containing a hidden item with a distinct smell. As the children move the train along the 'tracks' (I use masking tape on the table in a track shape), they can open one of the 'cars' and smell the contents of the container to guess what is hidden inside.

Songs
Train Whistle's Blowing
Train whistle's blowing
Makes a sleepy noise
Underneath the blankets
Go all the girls and boys
Heading for the station
Out along the bay
All bound for morning town
Many miles away.
child's name at the engine
child's name rings the bell
child's name swings the lantern
To show that all is well
Heading for the station
Out along the bay
All bound for morning town
Many miles away.

Little Red Caboose
Little red caboose, chug-chug-chug
Little red caboose, chug-chug-chug
Little red caboose behind the train, whoo-whoo
Smoke stack on it's back, back, back, back
Going down the track, track, track, track
Little red caboose behind the train, whoo-whoo
