Sailboats
Place a piece of clay in the center of a tin foil baking cup.
Cut a straw to the correct size and place in the clay to stand - this will hold the sail.
Cut a sail from thick paper and have children decorate with crayons and stickers.
Mac tac to protect from the water if you wish. Boats are ready to sail.

Rafts
Have the children glue popsicle sticks side by side. Glue two across these once dry for support.

Cut and Paste Watercolour
Have children paint an ocean onto a piece of paper. When dry, provide paper and scissors for children to cut shapes from to design and glue boats on their water.

Design-A-Boat
Provide different materials that will float - pie tins, styrofoam trays, plastic containers (margarine, yogourt, etc.)
for children to design a boat. Include items for accessories such as paper, tin foil, straws
(clay to stand the straws in), etc. Once completed, the children can use their boats
in the science experiment listed below.

Children paint large paper bags orange. When dry, cut out head and arm holes for a life jacket.

Float and Sink Experiments
1. Provide objects that float and sink at the water table for experimentation.
2. Have children experiment with their boat designs. Use coins or blocks to see which boats will carry the most weight. Which ones will sink first/float longest... why?

Waterplay - add blue/green food colouring to the water and put in different types of boats.

Dramatic Play
Fishing - Use the cardboard box boat and paper bag lifejackets to set up a fishing area.
Rods can be made from rounded dowels with short strings and a magnet attached or even
rulers. Add a pail and some paper or felt fish with a paperclip so the children can really 'fish'
and make the catch of the day.
