Crafts & Activities

Raindrop Pictures
Using a shaker container (I use old spice jars) have the children sprinkle dried tempera on pieces of heavy paper. Take the children outiside with their pictues on a day when you have a VERY light rain (where you would still go out) and let the falling drops make a picture. This will create some really neat splatter patterns.

Spray Bottle Pictures
Arrange tissue paper or crepe paper (make sure it will 'bleed') on a piece of paper. Give the children spray bottles with water and mist the paper until wet. Let dry and remove the tissue paper. A pattern will be left behind on the paper.

Ocean in a Bottle
Fill a 2 litre pop bottle 1/2 full with water. Add blue/green food colouring for an ocean. Put small plastic fish in the water (the 'rubbery' ones will fold and fit nicely in the bottles) and seal. I used tape to secure after closing the lid. Children can tip their ocean sideways and move it from side to side to make waves and the fish swim.

Ocean in a Bottle 2
Fill a 2 little pop bottle 1/2 full with water. Put in water, oil, and a little glitter or some foam shaped fish, and glue on lid.

Whirlpools
You need 2 identical plastic bottles - either pop or water bottles work nicely. Fill one 3/4 full and add food colouring and glitter if you wish. Put the other bottle on top mouth to mouth and seal with waterproof glue. I also taped mine for extra security. Children tip bottle over so water is on top. A whirlpool will result as the water passes from the top bottle down to the bottom - if they give the bottle a little 'swirl' it will happen sooner.

Paint with Water
Buy cheap paintbrushes at the $ store and provide paintpots or cups of water and let the children paint outside.

Science Activity
Float/Sink. Fill the water table (or a rubbermaid container) with water. Have a chart of items and a tray with the items on it. The children first make their guess on the chart of whether the items will float or sink. Then they can test their hypothesis. When making charts for this type of activity, I use bristle board and mac tac them. Add a bit of velcro to the chart (you only need one generic chart and can velcro the words on as well to suit many needs!) I add the other piece of the velcro to the picture of the item. The children can use the charts on their own and they are durable.

Math Activity
Volume. Have different shaped containers that all contain the same amount of water. Have the children guess if they contain the same amount, more, or less. Pour each container into a measuring cup to measure the amount of water that was in each. Discuss how all liquids take the form of the container they are poured into.

Sensory Activity
Water Play. Add different items to the water table. If you have older children and this is not a choking hazard, you can add balloons with different amounts of water in them. My guys LOVE this. Some with air, some partially filled and some water balloons. They love the way that some float, some partially sink and some will go straight to the bottom!

Water Limbo
Set up a hose, the children line up and take turns going under the hose. Start high and lower the hose a bit on each new round.

Special Day
Water Day. Set up different water stations like water balloon toss, ladle and bucket race, wet sponge toss, water table, boat station, painting with water, etc.

Songs

Song - If All the Raindrops

If all the raindrops
Were lemondrops and gumdrops
Oh, what a rain it would be!
I'd stand outside, with my mouth open wide
I'd be wishing for raindrops all the time
If all the raindrops
Were lemondrops and gumdrops
Oh, what a rain it would be!

Recipes

Snow Cones

Make ice with the children showing them that water will freeze into ice. Crush the ice in a blender or ice machine. Pour into dixie cups and add juice. Enjoy on a hot day!
