Why I love The Legend of Zelda Series. A really sappy memoir by Philip Wesley of Dmg Ice Hardcore Gameboy. http://come.to/DmgIce Opening: I remember when I got my Gameboy. My mom and Dad had oredered it for a Christmas present. My mom gave me a choice between a Game Gear, a Lynx, and a Gameboy. I chose a Gameboy. My mom thought that it was strange that I didn't want one in color; but I said I wanted it for the games that it had. Namely; at that time "Super Mario Land 2". I had seen the commercials and I wanted that game badly. My first games were Tetris, Super Mario Land, Ducktales, and eventually Super Mario Land 2. I remember how I had grown up buying into that stupid hype that RPGS were "Satanic". Well, I had always thought Legend of Zelda to be an "Evil RPG." But, then I got issue 50 of Nintendo Power with the gold cover and coverage of Link's Awakening. (That's Legend of Zelda 4.) I looked at the graphics and thought; "WOW!" this game is pretty good at the graphics thing. Then I skimmed through the rest of the issue and didn't think twice about the game. Then a friend of mine bought the game and brought his Gameboy over; I wanted to try Link's Awakening. WHen I saw the animated intro; I thought it was the best thing I had ever seen. I then started a new game; after inputting my name; the story started. I was surprised by the game. It was fun; I was totally emersed in the game. (The last time that I had gotten totally emersed in a game like this was Metroid 2; but that's a different thing altogether.) It was great; I loved the music; and the Windfish's theme was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. I bought that game after my buddy went home; I then played the game practically non-stop. I got stuck in Level 4 for a while; so I ordered a Player's Guide. (I was in Germany; and in Germany it takes like 6 weeks for an order to get to the base.) Well, the same day I ordered the guide; I beat Level 4. I kept going and I finally beat Legend of Zelda 4; a month after I had bought it, on a road trip to Switzerland with my scout troop. I got the player's guide a week later. (I just used it to get the last few heart pieces.) Well, after that, I HAD to get a SNES; I saved up my money from babysitting. (No easy feat when you work for $2 an hour at babysitting.) I went to get my Super Nintendo at a base in Wiesbaden. They were going to close the electronic store there and they had some GREAT deals. To this day; you'd be hard pressed to get a deal like I got. $75 for a NEW SNES, with two controllers, the mouse, Mario Paint, and Super Mario World. Best use of my money I could have possibly done. I had saved 150 dollars for my SNES; and since I had money left over, I bought Super Mario All-Stars as well. Then one night; I went to the store to get a game called Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past; I had saved up another $60 dollars. (I ended up spending $40 on the game.) Link to the Past was great; but it wasn't as hard as Link's Awakening was. When I moved to the states; I got an NES free from some people at a garage sale. (Mainly; because it didn't work.) I went and tried to get the people at Funcoland to fix it; but they said no. I bought another NES at Funcoland for $20 with Legend of Zelda 1, and The Adventure of Link. I fixed the old NES myself and sold it at a garage sale for $10. (It turned out that the only problem with the NES was a huge hairball that had somehow ended up in the circuitry. That and I had to resoder a wire.) Well, I have every Legend of Zelda game available now. (I've played the CD-I ones; but they aren't, in my opinion, part of the actual series. Legend of Zelda with FMV. Yuck.) I bought my N64 almost a year after it was released for $130 dollars. And I bought Super Mario 64. I have been anticipating Legend of Zelda 64 and all the wonders it will bestow. After listening to some piano music of Zelda's Theme at Z64. I have come to realise that Legend of Zelda 5 is going to be a great game; but I think that the ending will be bittersweet; like Legend of Zelda 4; or the comic series in Nintendo Power. And I'm okay with that. In fact I'm hoping that the ending is bittersweet. The Legend has finally developed a lot of depth. Well, enough of the opening; I'm going to review all four of my games. These aren't formal "Graphics, Sound, etc" review. These are my personal opinions of each and every one of the series. Legend of Zelda: This is where it began for many people; I am impartial to this game. Mainly; because it gave me about a few weeks to beat. I liked the bosses; but the game comes off as impractical to me some times. The nature of the animal is exploration and I must say that I liked this game; but when I got to Gannon; I beat him on my first try. :( My cartridge is gold. Legend of Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link: I love this game; it's my second favorite of the series. I hate it when people say they don't think that it's good; and have never played it. I loved the leveling up part and the game is just hard. This is the only Legend of Zelda game that I haven't beaten yet. I love it and I will keep playing until I beat it. The game is very addicting; but maybe it's because I have a huge attention span. My cartridge is gold as well. Legend of Zelda 3: A Link to the Past: This game was to me; very easy. It wasn't as hard as the first two, or Legend of Zelda 4. It's not my favorite. But, it's up there. It's pretty good. And the story was great too. I loved the bosses. Legend of Zelda 4: Link's Awakening This game started the whole obssession for me. I love this game. I still feel a little sad when I hear the Ballad of the Windfish. This is in my opinion; the best game ever created. I know Koholint like the back of my hand and I have played through this game hundreds of times; and I can't wait for the Color Rerelease of the Game. (In fact, I'm wanting that game and a Color Gameboy a little more than Legend of Zelda 5....) This is my favorite Legend of Zelda game. It's plot is deep; and it is the best I have ever played. Legend of Zelda 5: The Ocarina of Time. I can't wait for this one as well. November is going to be a good month for me. :) Ending: Well, this has been a really sappy memoir on the Legend of Zelda series. My favorite game is Legend of Zelda 4, Legend of Zelda 2 is second, Legend of Zelda 3 is fourth, and Legend of Zelda 1 is last for now. Thank you for reading! Philip Wesley wwesley@internetland.net
