Bomberman GB By Hudson Reviewed by The Avardancer Size: 4 megabits Save: Password, 4 characters, numeric Released: 1998 Works with: Any Version of Gameboy Opening Snide Remarks: Bomberman on Gameboy? Will it retain all it's goodness? How will this stand up to the other games in the series? Actually, Bomberman GB is Bomberman 2 in Japan. Wario Blast is Bomberman 1 in Japan. (Wario was added to Wario Blast to make it appeal to American gamers. Some how, I don't see the reasoning in that statement.) Gameplay: There's a good amount of variety in the game with two routes to take. (A and B) On the Super Gameboy, you can have a four player match with the Mulit-Tap. The bosses are cool. (And fairly difficult.) There's a story to the game and it's not too deep; but it works. There is a lesson mode to help you beat the different levels. A password saves your progress through the game. (Write your passwords down!) What the game boils down to in Gameplay is that you must destroy the enemies. When you destroy all the enemies, you can advance to the next level. The only variations of this theme are levels where the enemies must be destroyed in a specific order or they regenerate if thier "nest" is not destroyed. Another interesting diversion of the theme is that there are other obstacles to defeat. One level has you light barrels to be able to see the enemies. The game cleans up in four-player mode though. That game is fairly fun; although it is not "varied". It mostly consists of strategy and speed. Graphics: Nice Super Gameboy colors and borders. The graphics are clear and fun. On any of the portable versions of Gameboy; the graphics are STILL easy to see. The game has little "cut-scenes" and introductory screens. The animation of the main character is very simple; but it works. Sound: Okay explosions, but if you put it into the Super Gameboy! GREAT SOUNDING EXPLOSIONS! Nothing like Explosion Enhancement! Other than that? The game is full of normal sounding sounds. Your basic bells and whistles. Nothing truly original; but nothing out of place. Music: Forgetable and oft times..... annoying. Turn down the volume for the sake of humanity! Okay, I may be exaggerating a bit there; but the music is not very good. Play Control: No delays, or sliding. If you blow yourself up; it's YOUR fault. Hit detection isn't biased for or against you. The main character plods along at a reasonably good pace. Yeah. Nice. Final Analysis: Like Bomberman? Get this game! It's pure Bomberman on the go. (A Game-Link Mode would have been nice.) The game is a nifty little time killer. And it is very good in multi-player. Check it out if you dig Bomberman's classic style.
