Game and Watch Gallery 2 Game by Nintendo Reviewed by The Avardancer Released: 1998 Save: Battery Size: 8 Megabits Use with: Gameboy Color, Super Gameboy, Gameboy. Opening Snide Remarks: This game was SUPPOSED to come out about a year or two ago. but, it got delayed many, many times. It eventually became a Gameboy Color launch title. Hmm. Well, time to dive into the game I have been waiting to play for a while. :) Gameplay: Classic Game and Watch stuff. There's five games and one hidden game. They are based on the old Game and Watch games that Nintendo released a while back. The idea of the games? Get a load of points. Every 200 points you obtain; you earn a star. Get enough stars and you open up cool stuff like an extra game, sound test, trade (?!), and a museum. Not to mention you can get some nice "super fast" versions of the modern games. Some of the games are quite simple; but others a little complex. All of them start out kinda dull; but get faster and more frantic. When they get fast.... they get really fun! The game has lots of rewards and things to do and obtain through the use of points. There's many different variations of the good old Game and watch classics. There's a MODERN mode and a CLASSIC mode. And there's three versions of the Modern games. There's also about NINE versions of Modern Ball that can be earned. Sheesh. That's a bit much. :) Some of the games are easy. Some are not. Good clean fun for everyone; but those with short attention spans may not be so thrilled about the slow pace that the "EASY" versions of each game start at. There's also a "Stop Save' function. Pause during play and turn the unit off and your game will be saved in that spot. New stars and items for the gallery are saved automatically when you earn them. Graphics: The Classic versions are mostly black and white. But the MODERN versions are beautiful. A real showcase of the awesome power of Gameboy Color and it's ability. The animation is VERY good. I'm lovin' every minute of it. Looks great on Super Gameboy as well with it's Color Pallettes and some real purty frames. Easy to see on Gameboy too. Gameboy Color though; kicks every other Gameboy devices butt on this game with it's beautiful use of color. Looks good in any Gameboy. This game looks easily better than many Game Gear games; heck, it looks better than some Super Nintendo games. Tons of color and animation. The game is ALIVE! Wow. This game makes Gameboy Color look good; just by being on it. Heck, the graphics in this game rule. Sound: There's the standard beeps and blips of the old games and the new games feature fitting sounds too. The sounds are not warbled or muted either. AND the game isn't using "cookie-cutter" sound like some games. Music: Rich Stereo. :) Some of the music is really cool. It sounds like old style rock and roll. AND most of the music is loooong and varied. Earn the sound test and enjoy the great music. Some very good stuff. The Gameboy Color has a new sound chip and this sound chip kicks serious butt. The music is deep, rich and almost sexy. Some of the tunes can grate on your nerves after too long though. But, a lot of the music is great. AND it uses more than 4-channels. Play Control: Simple control in almost all the games is accurate and good. The game "Chef" though is a bit akward to control at times because the game (Modern version) is a bit complex; although it becomes second nature quickly. Final Analysis: Do you like retro games? Do like games which are basically "reflex tests"? Than you NEED this game. If you dig the first one; you'll adore this one. Buy it if you loved the first one. Score Gameplay: ***** Graphics: ***** Sound: ***** Music: ***** Play Control: **** Total: 24 Final Score: 96% Currently Known Codes: Border Change = Press the START button, and the little box that shows up with the options CONTINUE and QUIT show up. To change the border of that box, press UP and B or DOWN and B. Play as Wario in "Helmet"! This cool code is a little tricky; but here's the deal. Start a game of Modern Helmet and die with a low score. "D.J." the Sound Test: When you are playing some music in the sound test; press the A button to hear a noise from the game. The noise is different for each song. Hidden Characters on the Game Select screen: Highlight any of the games. (Except Ball.) Now, wait a little while and the stars will change into Mario characters from the respective games.
