Killer Instinct By Nintendo Review by The Avardancer Size: 4 Megabits Save: None. Released: 1995 Works with: Any version of Gameboy Opening Snide Remarks: One of my favorite fighting games... on GAMEBOY? NO WAY! (Yes way.) How on earth is Rare going to stuff that game into a 4 megabit cartridge? Well, to begin with; they simplified the game engine, and removed Cinder, and Riptor. They also had to redo some of the music. But, they have piled on some nice Super Game Boy enchancements. Very good. Hmm. Gameplay: So you cruised thru KI GOLD? You've mastered KI and KI 2. Now, "meat", try Killer Instinct GB! Heh. Heh. Heh. This is harder than most all of the Killer Instinct games. The opponents aren't as smart as they are on the N64 or Arcade; but their mean, nasty, and sometimes cheap. This is fighting for pros. It's more combo and move oriented than it's relatives. Sometimes, it seems as if Eyedol has been watching you throughout the game and prepared it's strategy. Know thy Combo Breakers! Graphics: Really nice. The graphics are rendered; but not obscured. This game looks great on any version of Gameboy. It looks excellent on Super Gameboy with it's border and color schemes. The graphics are really cool. I noticed that one frame of animation is recycled in the game; but most people won't notice it. (For "Dead or Alive" fans: B. Orchid bounces.) The characters are pretty big on screen. All the character endings are intact as well. :) Sound: You can tell the difference between a blocked hit and a hit; know this. It will help you. Remember not to use huge combos on Eyedol; unless you have an opening; cause he'll block them and repeat them on your face. If Eyedol's blocking; jump out of the way as fast as you can! Music: The music kicks more butt than Fulgore. It's great! It's better than the music in most N64 games. (Hey, even some Playstation games can't hold a candle to the music in this game.) When the music gets faster; SOMEONE is going to die. Play Control: REALLY TIGHT. Some moves are easy to do; some aren't. Final Analysis: Do you like fighting games? You might like this one. Be warned though that Riptor and Cinder were removed; and everyone has only ONE Danger Move. But Comebacks, Humiliations, Combo Breakers, and really huge combos are still here! The biggest combo I have been able to pull was a 36 with Sabrewulf. (Pure Luck.) This is really good. SCORE Gameplay: ***** (5 out of 5) Graphics: ***** (5 out of 5) Sound: ** (2 out of 5) Music: **** (4 out of 5) Play Control: **** (4 out of 5) Total (20 X 4= 80) Final Score: 80% Currently Known Codes. Random Select: At the character select screen, press UP and START at the same time. Play as EYEDOL: (This doesn't mean you'll win though..) At the screen where they show the fighters close-up pictures before a fight; hold RIGHT and then press SELECT, START, B, and A. (Just hold down RIGHT; don't hold down the other buttons. Or you'll reset the game.)
