Mario's Picross Game by Nintendo Review by Adrock gbcam@hotmail.com Size: 4 Megabits Save: Battery, 3 slots Released: 1995 Works with: Any version of Gameboy **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: Picture. Crossword. Put them together and you've got Picross, a japanese hit puzzle that has made it here to the states. **************************************************************************** Gameplay Descripion: To play, you chisel out parts of a picture by using the number clues on the side. For an example... --------- 111 51115 5 ..... 1 1 ..... 5 ..... 1 1 ..... 1 1 ..... --------- Chisel out all the ones that say five; that means there are 5 on there in a row. --------- 111 51115 5 OOOOO 1 1 O...O 5 OOOOO 1 1 O...O 1 1 O...O --------- It's done! The "1 1"'s show that there are two consective groups of one chisel on each row. It's the letter A! Of course, all puzzles aren't that easy. Soon you'll be chiseling the whole dang alphabet. If you still can't understand there is an in-game tutorial. With 200+ puzzles, time limits, error demerits, and even a random puzzle generator, you'll be set for the rest of your Picross life! Liked: Awesome game with a fun concept. In-game tutorial. Hated: Frustrating a lot of the time. **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: This is one of the games that GBC will recognize. It will get a suitable palette, but not full color. The puzzles may seem a little small on the screen. The Super Game Boy enhancement thing is a fun start. The game has a kind of Egypt theme, since lots of archealogists have to chisel, too. It's fun seeing Mario in that hat. Liked: CGB default palette and SGB frame fun. Cool game theme. Hated: Different looking themes for boards would have been nice. Could use a zoom feature. **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: The sound FX are appropriate for play, there is one for making an error, one for doing something right, etc. The music is cool and keeps a good beat that won't let you let go of the game. Liked: Cool and appropriate songs for play. Hated: No nags here. **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: Good. Liked: Control is good. Design is good. It's just so good. Hated: It's not bad, it's good. **************************************************************************** Improve: Custom puzzle mode, and trading for this mode. Mario Picross GBC. (What if you had to chisel blocks and make them a certain color?? Gasp!) RIYL: A new kind of puzzle. **************************************************************************** Final Words: It's a good game for the road, or anywhere. You need it. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: ***** Graphics: **** Sound/Music: **** Play Control/Game Design: ***** Personal Opinion: **** Total: 22 Final Score: %88 **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: Erase a Save File: Press A, B, and Select all at the same time and an erase option will show up.
