Mortal Kombat 4 Game by Midway/Digital Eclipse Reviewed by Adrock gbcam@hotmail.com Size: 8 Megabits (1 Megabyte.) Save: None. Released: 1998 (?) Works with: Any version of Gameboy **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: Mortal Kombat 1 was not cool. Mortal Kombat 2 and 3 were a little better. But, guess who helped with this game? None other than Jeff Frohwein, the guy with the most popular Game Boy Technical web site on the net. He knows more about Game Boy then Nintendo does probably. **************************************************************************** Gameplay Descripion: The gameplay is better. It's faster or something. The reason is, not as much character detail. The older games had so much of it that you could press punch and see your character punch two years later. This game feels more like the better fighters. But it still got problems... There's no two player. It feels like the deadline for the game caused things to get rushed. But, there's FULL MOTION VIDEO for the fatalities. That's right. You've seen Game Boy Camera's animation. Now see it in color. They are about 5 seconds long. Liked: Feels faster, and plays more like PQ and KI. The FMV is cool. Hated: A really rushed game, or it would of been the best GB MK ever. **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: On monochromes, the game don't look too good. The characters and backgrounds blend in. The Super Game Boy and Color Game Boy look almost identical though. The Super Game Boy frame is awesome. It looks so-so on both of those versions. An OK choice of color. Liked: Looks better than the other MK's on SGB and CGB. Hated: On GB... it feels a little faster, but looks a little worse. The game is kind of "color dependant" as Philip Wesley calls it. **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: There is only one song, and it isn't very good. There is voice in the game, but it isn't as clear as it could be. Liked: Voice in the game! Hated: One song? No. No, no, no. **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: Control is more responsive now than the other games, but still work needs to be done. It feels looser now because of the loss of some of those sprites on the characters. Liked: Control is more responsive than the other games. Hated: Work needs to be done! **************************************************************************** Improve: It seems like Mortal Kombat can be done a lot better... think... with a GBC dedicated mode, it could be 32 megs, or even 64 megs... It would rock. RIYL: Mortal Kombat 1, 2, 3. **************************************************************************** Final Words: Seems that Jeff and the Midway team have made the bed for Mortal Kombat's GB engine... But now, they need to clean the WHOLE room. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: *** Graphics: *** Sound/Music: * Play Control/Game Design: ** Personal Opinion: ** Total: 11 Final Score: %44 **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: These codes don't list Shinok... because that code wasn't known at the time. ----K-O-M-B-A-T---C-O-D-E-S---- 192234 = Enable Reptile. 100100 = Disable Throws 205205 = Fight Reptile 707000 = You have 1/4 energy 033000 = You have 1/2 energy 000707 = Computer has 1/4 energy 000033 = Computer has 1/2 energy 688422 = Dark Kombat 987123 = No Power bars 985125 = Pyscho Kombat 020020 = Disable blocks ------------------------------- More continues = On the "Choose Your Destiny" screen where you choose what difficulty wou want; press UP on the control pad to change the amount of continues you have.
