Gameboy Printer System by Nintendo Reviewed by The Avardancer Released: 1998 Height: About 5 1/2 inches long. Width: About 3 inches wide. Depth: About 2 1/2 inches including top bubble case for printer rolls. Weight: About 7 ounces. (Almost half a pound.) This weight is with batteries and full printer roll. Battery Life: About 30+ on six AA batteries. Opening Snide Remarks: This is a PRINTER for Gameboy. Yes, you may be some what confused by the fact that this is a PRINTER for Gameboy. Well, it looks interesting; but could it become an obscure attachment in the mists of time sans Power Pad and R.O.B.? Or will it be a success like Rumble Pak, Nintendo Light Zapper, and Game Link cable? I think it shoulld be reviewed to see if it can stand up to what it claims, etc. Impressions: If you have a Gameboy Camera; you probably bought this too. It allows you to print out stickers on thermal paper. (The same type of paper used in recipts.) Because of the use of thermal paper there is no ink to replace. The Gameboy Camera isn't the only game to use the printer. Some notable games are NFL Blitz, Legend of Zelda: "Link's Awakening" DX, and Pokémon Yellow in Japan. The system is priced at $60 msrp. Some place will sell it a bit cheaper though. The cost of the unit also includes a "Universial" Game Link Cable, a roll of white thermal paper/stickers, and SIX AA batteries. The thing is darn impressive looking. Additional Printer Paper sells from $7 to $10 dollars for a pack of three rolls in blue, yellow, and white. Liked: I like the fact that the unit is supported by some of the up-coming Gameboy Color titles. I like the fact that it includes a UNIVERSIAL Game Link cable for free. The unit can also be used with any version of Gameboy except for Super Gameboy. You can use it on the import accessory "Super Gameboy 2". It works well and fairly quick on a normal Gameboy. Hook it up to a Gameboy Color and it flies. The stickers are pretty cool. The unit is very sturdy and it is not too heavy nor flimsy feeling. Replacement parts, etc, are fairly inexpensive. Batteries seem to last forever. I have only changed the batteries ONCE since I have had the unit. I was using the original batteries for 3 months of normal use. If you hold down the "FEED" button and turn the power on; the system prints out a test sticker. Removing, replacing, and changing rolls of paper is a fairly simple process. Hated: I hate it's size. I wish it was smaller and used less batteries. The bubble on the top looks like it could break. (It hasn't though.) I wish it worked on even more games. Sometimes paper can jam up if the paper is tugged or otherwise moved during the printing process. It's a bit too long for on the go use in my opinion. I wish it had an infrared port like Gameboy Color does. The pictures can fade if they are handled too much or exposed to constant high temperatures. The little slit that seperates the sticker and the backing is a bit difficult to find at first. It still feels like an unusual novelty. Where's my pink, gray, light orange, and neon yellow paper? Final Words: Do you have a camera? You do? Cool. Get this. It is a definate must for Gameboy Camera owners. If you do not however own a Gameboy Camera; you can wait on this purchase and buy it when you either have a Gameboy Camera or a Printer-Compatible game. The printer is a solid purchase for those lucky people like myself who own a Gameboy Camera. It is gaining a lot of new support from developers. I can see the Printer becoming a "must buy; but can not find" item in the near future. Scoop one up. It comes with a Game Link cable too. Score: 89%
