Quest for Camelot Game by Titus/Nintendo Reviewed by The Avardancer Size: 8 Megabits (1 Megabyte) Save: Battery/1 save slot Released: 1998 Works with: Any version of Gameboy. **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: Hmm. Here's a game I bought; because I felt like it. Okay, I bought it just to review it. And besides, I like RPGs and had already beaten Shadowgate Classics, and Legend of Zelda 4 DX for Gameboy Color. Hmmm. What's this? Something everyone missed in previous reviews! You can PRINT the cut-scenes in the game. Tsk. Tsk. How could everyone miss this? Oh, I also noticed that there was no mention of it's Super Gameboy Enchancements! Even Nintendo Power missed this. (Don't worry, I called everyone at Nintendo up and they sent it through the RSF.) Anyways, here is a game that has had only half of it's potential exploited. **************************************************************************** Gameplay Descripion: The game follows the movies plot fairly close. It has a story that is told through long text. You basically hunt for objects and kill a few enemies and bosses. Nothing monumentally original. The game plays well, but has a good deal of flaws. Sadly, they detract a bit from the game. The game IS fun mind you; but it can get a bit deriative and repetitive. Most of the game is, as I said before, finding things. The game progresses in a linear matter. You can not revisit the levels you have completed. :( You find objects to beat simple puzzles and beat simple enemies. It play a little like Final Fantasy Adventure and Legend of Zelda 4: "Link's Awakening". It has some high goals; and fails to meet them in terms of gameplay. Absolutely little to no replay value. Oh, well. It is fun. Liked: It's fun and a nice attempt on Titus's part. Hated: Too linear, repetitive, no discernable replay value. **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: The Super Gameboy color palletes stink to high heaven. The border is nice though. It looks okay on a normal Gameboy. The character is very large on-screen. So are the enemies. This can be bad at times. The game is littered with little "cut-scene" stills based on the movie. I have one word for Titus: "Teirtex". Teirtex designed the MOVING cinema scenes for Men In Black, and the opening of A Bug's Life. You can print out the cinema scenes by hooking up your printer and pressing select when the cinema screen is shown. The screens are okay. Some are very nice; other's are pretty "fugly". (Don't ask about the term. It isn't a clean term.) The first one which shows Kayley and her dad is very disturbing and I am scarred for life. The main graphics are fairly clean and crisp. The screen pictures given to press magazines before do the game no justice. Although, Kayley walks like she is either: A. Trying to stride like a man. B. Just had an unpleasant cavity search. OR C. Is crippled by a paralyzing fungus that has grown on her leg causing her to limp around like an idiot. (It looks really dumb. Really.) The Gameboy Color enchancements are nice. The screen that says Nintendo is really pretty. The game has crisp colorful graphics that are pretty well done in the normal in-game play screens. The game needs some more detail in places and looks just down right wrong in other places. The graphics can not decide whether they are cartoonish or serious. Anyways, SD looking characters do not seem to fit the game. Why does Kayley look like an extra from South Park? Oh, did I mention that when you leave one area to go to another area; there's a really groovy special effect? There is and it's groovy. Liked: The colorful Gameboy Color enchancements. Lots of nice color. That groovy special effect. Hated: Some of those picture stills, the animation, out-of-place graphics, and more plague this game. :( **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: The music? Well, it's there and it's average. Sadly, it os very long; but very predictable. The sound effects are mostly muffled for some odd reason. sad but true. Liked: Long songs that are not annoying. Hated: Long songs that are not memorable or inovative. The music is filler material. (Just like the movie.) **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: Kayley tries to make a good game by taking elements from the best. Sadly, the little things bring down a really generic game. One is the play control. Kayley has some bad hit detection. You could be on a different path than your enemy. But, your enemy will hit you when you can not hit them. Also, she swings her sword strange. It doesn't have the reach that the enemies weapons have. Luckily you get a weapon that can hit them from afar. You have to pay to save; but you can save anywhere. Save wisely in this game, not frequently. Liked: Umm. It's kind a fun. Hated: Unoriginal, bad hit fetection, bad save engine. **************************************************************************** Improve: No sequel please. One is enough, although this game could be better if it was less linear, had moving cinemas, better music, better sound, a better plot, and something original. RIYL: Final Fantasy Adventure, Legend of Zelda 4: "Link's Awakening" DX, James Bond 007. **************************************************************************** Final Words: The game is fun; but it is pretty flawed. Younger players will like it for it's ease of play; but serious gamers require more meat in a game experience. Sadly, this doesn't deliver that meat. (And don't even ask about the potatoes.) **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: **** Graphics: **** Sound/Music: ** Play Control/Game Design: ** Personal Opinion: **** Total: 16 out of 25 Final Score: 64% **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: Print out the cinema scenes!
