Street Fighter 2 Game by Capcom (You were expecting anyone else?) Reviewed by The Avardancer Size: 4 Megabits Save: None Released: 1995 Works with: Any version of Gameboy Opening Snide Remarks: Street Fighter 2 on Gameboy. If you do not believe in the awesome power of the Gameboy; then you probably do not believe me; but it is true! Ye of little faith. The game is actually a straight port of the Japanese version. (Aside from the slight name changes. Japanese Vega is the American M. Bison, Japanese M. Bison is the American Balrog. Got it?) Well, the game is suprisingly complete game; although it does not feature the American Vega, E. Honda, and Dhalism. If you suddenly cringe at the lack of those three characters; just remember how cheap they are as computer opponents. Ryu, Ken, Guile, Sagat, Blanka, Chun Li, Balrog, Zangeif, and M. Bison are here. They all have thier moves from Super Street Fighter 2. For example; Chun Li has her fireball. Some of the special moves can be activated in the air if you are quick enough. I have thrown people in mid-jump before with Chun Li, Guile, M. Bison, Ryu, and Zangeif. The game does not feature the "Bonus" stages from the arcade. :( Gameplay: Picture the original Street Fighter 2; but with all the moves from Super Street Fighter 2. That is how the game feels. The game moves a little slow compared to say: "King of the Fighters 1995". (That game is exceedingly fast.) The game relies on the principle that "Every move has a weakness". For example; if your enemy throws a certain move; you need to counter it or avoid it. The game plays like the arcade game. (The first arcade game.) It's a technical fighter; not a lot of flash. The idea of the game is to beat all nine of the World Warriors! Each character has thier own ending. (Which you can see if you beat it on a difficulty level of three stars or higher. The game is pretty fun; but it can be tough for "normal" gameplayers. The enemies can be a little cheap; but the game also features a two player Game Link mode and a Two Player Super Gameboy mode. The game also features a brand new "Survival" mode. You have to beat each of the fighters without losing one match. That's fun; because it is a bit tough and the enemies go in a random order. The game is about fighting; but it is a "smart" fighter. If/when you lose; you need to think to yourself. What did I do wrong. You'll notice that you can almost always tell when the fight went sour. Just remember and learn from your mistakes. You will find that you need a strategy to beat each fighter. The game is fun; but it can be frustrating for some players. (They may wanna quit when M. Bison crushes them for the tenth time on five star difficulty.) The game features infinite continues. The fighters can make you mad and you really get an adrenaline rush as you fight against the enemy. It can get pretty intense and difficult. When you get to the point that you know your opponents, you know your moves, and you know your strategy; you enter a "zone" where you feel superior and that is where you are at your most agressive. That agression zone is what you need to beat the game; be angry at the game and fight hard. Once you have mastered this game; some of those new "flashy" fighters will seem too easy. :) The game is an excellent way to keep your skills peaked. Graphics: Despite a slight loss of background animation and one or two frames of animation; the game moves at very good pace and the fighters are pretty big on-screen. The graphics are nice and easy to see. It looks like Street Fighter 2. The Super Gameboy Color is minimal; but the game does have borders that change for each level. Despite having no Gameboy Color enchancements or options to that effect; the game looks pretty nice on Gameboy Color and seems to move a little smoother. (Huh?) The graphics for the special moves are identical to the arcade. The character endings are pretty cool looking. I never noticed this until now; but Eyedol's ending in Killer Instinct is a parody of Blanka's ending. Hmm. (Watches a few more endings.) Come to think of it; ALL the endings in Killer Insinct are parodies of the endings in this game. Cool. Sound: The game sounds like the arcade. The same sound effects are in affect here. That is very cool. Thank you Capcom. Okay, so the voices are missing. Oh, well. The game's sound effects fit the on-screen action; etc. Music: Midi versions that sound fairly identical to thier arcade counterparts. The music is COOL! You can recognize each character's themes and you can also recognize the music for the endings. :) Very cool. The game is very tight in this category. Capcom is awesome in the music department! Play Control: The play control is tight! The moves are simplified a little; but that is cool. You can choose how hard a punch or kick hits by how long you hold down the button. That is pretty cool and you start timing your moves to make primitive combos. A good way to get an opponent is to jump in with a weak punch and then press down and deliver a hard kick when you land. :) Final Analysis: If you like fighting games; you need a copy of this game. It belongs in every Gameboy fighting game enthusiasts library. :) Score Gameplay: ***** Graphics: ***** Sound: *** Music: ***** Play Control: *** Total: 21 out of 25 Final Score: 84% Currently Known Codes: None.
