Shadowgate Classic Game by Kemco Reviewed by -=\^/@!+er=- rex84@epix.net Size: 8 megabits Save: Battery/3 slots Released: January 26 Works with: Compatible with GameBoy/GameBoy Color Opening Snide Remarks: I've been looking forward to this game ever since I heard about it. I've always wanted to try one of those "Puzzle-RPG's" ... lets see how this one plays! Gameplay: You're the last hope for the kingdom. The game starts you out in front of Castle Shadowgate, and you must procede inside. Each time you enter a room, you're looking at one screen. You can open doors, use items, hit things, use magic, talk, and other sorts of things. This game is filled with puzzles, and is very tough. Some rooms require you to use a certain item, while others have you fighting monsters (there are a good number of these). Contrary to what I thought before I bought the game, the fighting is kind of dull. Remeber those movies with the troll on the bridge? Most of the monsters are sort of like that. If you move forward, or attack the wrong way you die. Also, expect to die a lot in this game. I die nearly ever other screen. This isn't a problem, though, because you have unlimited lives (remember, it's a puzzle game). One odd thing about this game is the "time limit." The game doesn't really have a time limit, but you have a limited number of torches (you can find torches, too) and when your torch runs out, you die. Graphics: The graphics are decent. They're OK, but they're exactly like the ones from the old NES version years back. There are very few animations, but it doesn't hurt the game too much. Aside from that, the color looks good. Sound: The sound is probably one of the worse points of the game. The are minimal beeps for menu selection, and that's about it. Music: There are only a few songs in the game. Whenever your torch gets lower, or is about to go out the music changes. There's also a "death" song that plays when you die. The music in Shadowgate isn't bad, but it's not good either. Play Control: The play control in this game only consists of moving the cursor around the room. It's smooth, it moves fast -- no problems here. Final Analysis: In the end, this is a solid game, and a good RPG. It takes a little patience (of which I have none), and once you beat it, you'll probably never pick it up again.
