Shanghai Pocket Game by Sunsoft Reviewed by Robby Cox koi@magicnet.net Size: 8 megabits Save: None Released: 1998 Works with: all Gameboy versions **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: I have always been a huge fan of Shanghai games. I think that a portable version would be awesome. **************************************************************************** Gameplay Descripion: Shanghai is best described as being similar to Solitaire but instead of cards you use Mahjohng tiles. You must match up like tiles until the playing area is cleared of tiles. There are 3 modes of play. Shanghai mode is just classic Shanghai. Gold Rush is where you must be the first to uncover the hidden golden tile. The final mode is Hong Kong which is a convoluted attempt at a battle mode. Liked: Classic Shanghai gameplay. Hated: Hong Kong Mode is lame. **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: The graphics in Shanghai Pocket are overall pretty good. The in-game graphics are somewhat plain dut to limited use of color. The cinema screens, on the other hand, are very colorful. Liked: The cinema screens. Hated: Limited use of color. **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: Shanghai Pocket's music is great. There really aren't many noticeable sound fx, though. Liked: The well-done music. Hated: Nothing. **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: The control in Shanghai Pocket is great. You click on one tile, then click on the matching tile. That's all. The design is great other than the lame Hong Kong mode, which I can forgive. Liked: Perfect control. Hated: Hong Kong Mode. **************************************************************************** Improve: Drop the Hong Kong Mode. RIYL: Any Shanghai game, Solitaire. **************************************************************************** Final Words: If you want an perfactly addictive game, then look no further than Shanghai Pocket. It would be a welcome addition to anyone's GameBoy library. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: ***** Graphics: **** Sound/Music: **** Play Control/Game Design: ***** Personal Opinion: ***** Total: 23 out of 25 Final Score: 92 % **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: None
