Side Pocket Game by Data East/Re-released by Sunsoft Reviewed by Robby Cox koi@magicnet.net Size: 512 Kilobits Save: None Released: 1990 Works with: all Gameboy versions **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: I have never owned a pool video game before. I remember playing an old NES pool game, that I hated, and I played the demo of Virtual Pool, which I thought was awesome. So I don't really have high hopes for this game. **************************************************************************** Gameplay Descripion: Side Pocket is a pool game that plays like pool. The biggest problem with this game is that there's really only 2 modes of play. There's 9 ball, where you play by yourself until you sink all of the balls, and Pocket, which is the competitive part of the game. In pocket you only have so many shots to sink all of the balls. You must get a good score to continue on to the next stage. There's also a 2 player mode if you have a link cable and 2 copies of this game. There should be more modes of play including a 2 player game where you just pass 1 Game Boy back and forth between the 2 players. Liked: Nice job of making a fun pool game. Hated: Not enough modes of play. **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: Side Pocket has some very early Game Boy visuals, but they get the job done. One of the nicest things about this game is the shot guide. There's a little line that shows you exactly where your shot's gonna go. This is very helpful. Liked: Shot guide. Hated: Nothing. **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: The music in Side Pocket is okay. You have the choice between 2 different songs and there's also the option to turn the music down. The sound fx are pretty good and they sound like a pool game should. Liked: Music options. Hated: Nothing. **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: Side Pocket has some great controls. They're simple enough that anyone can pick up and play this game. The game design is good, but there should have definitely been more modes of play. Liked: Great controls. Hated: This game needs more modes of play. **************************************************************************** Improve: Add more modes of play and GBC graphics. RIYL: Side Pocket(NES), Virtual Pool(PC,N64) **************************************************************************** Final Words: Side Pocket is great, yet simple, pool game. It's pretty fun to play for a while but the lack of more things to do will have you playing a different game after a while. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: *** Graphics: *** Sound/Music: *** Play Control/Game Design: *** Personal Opinion: *** Total: 15 out of 25 Final Score: 45 % **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: None
