Space Invaders 1994 By Taito/Nintendo Review by The Avardancer Size: 4 Megabits Save: None Released: Hmm. I think it may have been released in 1994. Works with: Any version of Gameboy Opening Snide Remarks: Space Invaders, the game that never dies. This game is just so cool. I remember playing it at Pizza Hut. (The Tabletop version of the Arcade game.) And now it's on Gameboy. Actually, this is the second time that Space Invaders has been on Gameboy. There is an early version; but it's rare and not as good as this one. Can Gameboy do a perfect Arcade transalation? Well, duh. This is Space Invaders. Gameplay: See the Aliens? Shoot each and everyone of them; before they reach the bottom of the screen or before they shoot you. Get lots and lots of points. I have a qualm with this game though. What's with the name? "Space Invaders" sounds like a game about Dorm Buddies or ex-boy/girl friends. It's fun though. And if you put it into the Super Gameboy it features a full fledged arcade mode. The game features many variations of the same game. The game can be a bit repetitive; but that is the nature of this type of game. There's nothing wrong with repetition. That's why I like the game; it's simple, and mindless fun. Games do not have to be varied or complex if they are fun. Space Invaders is fun. Although some of these "new wave" players. (Those who may not have grown up with Space Invaders, or ever touched a Game & Watch game.) They may not like this game. Too bad though. Their loss. Graphics: Play this on Gameboy and it's easy to see; but put it into a Super Gameboy and choose the Arcade Mode.... And BOOM! It's full screen, tons of neat-o colors. It looks exactly like the Arcade, and even has a MODE 7 opening title! WOW! This is so cool. It's worth the price of a Super Gameboy. Sound: The sounds sound primitive for nostalgia reasons; but if you are in the Arcade Super Gameboy mode; you can have Stereo sound and some of the sound effects on the Title Screen are sampled from Street Fighter 2. Cool. Music: Hear that heart beat like soundtrack; then hear the opening trumpets of the Arcade mode! This is just too cool. Play Control: Simple, quick, and easy to use. The buttons fire and the control pad moves left and right. Good and nice. Final Analysis: What did I pay for this game? Actually, I paid $15 for this game; and it was more than worth it. If I had to pay $30 I would have gladly paid it. This game is just too smooth. Oh, yeah. It has a two-player Game Link VS mode. How smooth is this game? It was re-released as a SNES game. Oh, course if you don't like Space Invaders; you might not like this game; even though this is the BEST Space Invaders port ever created. Gameboy has done killer old arcade conversions before. (Donkey Kong 1994 is a prime example of this.) I can't wait to see what type of NES ports the Color Gameboy can do! Score Gameplay: ***** Graphics: **** Sound: **** Music: **** Play Control: ***** Total Score: 22 out of 25 Final Score: 88% Currently Known Codes: Alien Rainbow: When playing the Super Gameboy or Gameboy version of the game; try and make the last alien left be a 10 point alien. (The ones in the first two rows are the ten points.) The alien will flash and shadow like Johnny Cage from Mortal Kombat and if you kill the Alien Rainbow; you'll get a LOT of points. It's tough though.
