Turok 2: seeds of evil [gb] Game by Acclaim Reviewed by Death Punk Size: 8 megabits Save: passwords, looooong passwords!! Released: 1998 Works with: all [best on color] Opening Snide Remarks: Having a slight hint of Native American in my heritage, as well as respecting them greatly, it has always made me a bit upset that there really isn't a positive Native American role model in modern culture. That all changed when I was 11 or 12, when I discovered a graphic novel [a book w/ pictures:)] about an old comic book hero named Turok. It really felt good to see native americans not portrade as the "bad guy" for a change. Now 5 years later he is in video games! Isn't technology great! Gameplay: T2 plays much like standard platformers, you dispatch oncoming hordes of enemies, while you search for items and weapons. Not exactly a great leap in gameplay, but it is realitively fun. The game, however, is scarred by some major flaws. The main one being the A.I. Baddies either stand still and shoot [badly] at you, or bum-rush and repeatedly WALK back a forth causing damage. That's right i said WALK!! Also the death animations are in need of a complete over-haul. When death comes to a foe it just falls of the screen, like Rush n' Attack for the old NES. Also the weapon aiming system is greatly flawed. When you want to shoot diagonally you start walking forward, to a untimely death VIA a huge cliff, And that is another problem! When will game developers realize that we gamers, when playing a platformer, DON'T LIKE MAKING HUGE DEATH JUMPS!!! Oh and even if you make a jump sometimes you'll still die, because you can now fall, acually hit the platform you wanted to get to, and STILL die. Minor flaws greatly anger me, especially when this game, while still good, could of been the best on the GBC. Graphics: This is where Acclaim, only second to Nintendo and Rare, shine! If you've played resent N64 games and have seen the quality of graphics in acclaim games, imagine that quailty, and how it compares to other n64 games, and then turn that into game boy. Turok 2's backgrounds and main sprites look fantastic!! Well, with the exception that there is a lot of "flickering" when more than two baddies get on screen: :( But still, it's almost early SNES quality!! Sound: The games sounds are very mediocere. It doesn't make you wanna throw-up; but it won't have you doing backflips either^_^ Music: Contrary to most Gameboy games, T2's music DOES really fit the game!! Some of the music [like in the one level where you fight the bees (lvl 6?)] is acually catchy! Play Control: No, problems here.....well just the, aiming system, the jumping system, the fact that you can't shoot with some weapons while jumping, the inability to shoot ahead of you while kneeling, the inability to shoot straight down, and most of all...the fact that Turok moves like a sumo wrestler walking on the surface of the moon while a midget rides on his back dangling a french fry in front of him. Final Analysis: You know, maybe i'm too hard on games or something, but i remember before i found this web-site, I would usually just buy a game based on box art, and to insure that nobody else wastes money and makes some of the mistakes i once made. While this is a great game in my opinion, but i really don't think this is the same quality game as zelda or pokemon. The game is only 8 levels, and even on hard isn't much of a challenge. Also unlike wario land 2, there isn't anything hidden. With that I mean, that once you've beaten the entire game once, there isn't anything else to find:( But you may, as i have, play through again just for fun. And Yes the game is fun, But a few small, but MAJOR, mistakes make this game -just- fall short of true, video gaming great-ness.
