Holdsclaw finished her third season with the Women’s National Basketball Association’s (WNBA) Washington Mystics team ranked fifth in the WNBA for points per game (16.8) and fourth for rebounds per game (8.8), and was named to the All-WNBA Second Team. After helping her team to a place in the 2000 playoffs, she was chosen for the 2000 WNBA All-Star Team. In 1999, after being selected as No. 1 pick in the 1999 WNBA draft by the Mystics, Holdsclaw won the 1999 WNBA Rookie of the Year Award and was voted a starter for the East Team for the inaugural WNBA All-Star Game.

At the 1998 World Championship, she helped the United States to win gold with a perfect 9-0 record. With the University of Tennessee women’s basketball team, she won three consecutive national championships (1998, 1997, 1996) and was named an Associated Press All-America for four consecutive seasons (from 1996-1997 to 1998-1999).

Holdsclaw remains the Southeastern Conference’s all-time leading scorer and is ranked third among all-time National Collegiate Athletic Association women’s basketball career points scorers.

In 1999, she was named Player of the Year by Sports Illustrated, Sporting News and Women’s Basketball Journal. That same year, she was a Naismith finalist and won the Sullivan Award, making her the first women’s college player to be so honored. Holdsclaw also won the 1999 ESPYs for Female Athlete of the Year and was honored in 1998 as one of 12 female athletes selected as inspirational role models by Women’s Sport and Fitness magazine.
