| Here are some links
you may find helpful in researching your Characters. I would like to express my
gratitude to the people who made these sites. All of these sites are cool. (At least
I think so.) 1920's (General) -
All of these links are excellent overviews of the decade and go into good detail of all
aspects both historical and cultural.
The 1920's Experience
The Nineteen Twenties: A Nation In Flux
Welcome to the 1920's
- A more humorous site with excellent movie and sound clips. Slow loading but well
worth it.
The Lawless Decade - Ooh as
soon as I loaded this one, I knew it was going to be good. I wasn't
disappointed.
Chicago - Info and
resources on Chicago both modern and historical.
The City of Chicago's Home Page - Need I say
more?
Chicago: Historical
Information About Chicago - A site by the Chicago Public Library.
Chicago,
Illinois: Encarta Encyclopedia - Good resource on the city and has some historical
info pertaining to our era.
Chicago Tunnel
Company - An absolute MUST for all you sewer rats out there.
Chicago Historical Society's History Files
History
Prosperity and Thrift: Coolidge
Era and the Consumer Economy, 1921-1929 - Ok. This is brought to us by the
Library of Congress and it is dry. However, it is one of the only sites I found on
the economy of the era and why the 1920's rocked.
American Memory from the Library
Congress - This is so cool. I majored in history and in art so
I REALLY dig this. This is a site by the LoC that searches hundreds of online
databases and can give you articles, pictures, sound files, just about anything on any
era. I recommend putting this resource in your favorites for research if not for
this game, for another. It is too good. I mean literally thousands of things
are here. I drooled all over this site for at least a week.
~BrerFox/links.html - Great
starting off point for researching different eras for character research. Supplies
links to other sites by era.
Prohibition
American
Temperance and Prohibition - A great overview of the origins of Prohibition and its
history. If anyone finds anything on
speakeasies, please email me.
Society and Culture - Art,
Architecture, Fashions, Flappers, Economics and Prices.
Art Deco Architecture
RETRO: Art Deco Interiors
- Has some excellent illustrations of restaurants and nightclubs of the era. The
site is good for getting a general feel for how things looked.
Silent Movie Stars - This resource is excellent
for Character Portraits for the Who's Who Section of this site
or for just getting an idea of what people looked like in the 1920's. There are
literally hundred of photos of persons of the era in every pose, size, age, type, shape,
and color. I recommend browsing their index, it's the easiest method of navigation.
Check it out, you won't be disappointed!
Flaming Youth - A good
liberal dose of popular attitudes of the younger generations of the era.
RETRO: Dandyism and
Masculine Splendor - Has a bit on fashion but it is a social overview on men of the
era.
Flapper Culture and Style
The Flapper Station - A must.
Very well done.
1920's Fashion (RETRO Magazine)
- A six page spread on fashion of the era focusing on women, but good for the gents as
well. Very complete.
Jazz Age Chicago Home Page
- This one is very good too.
Broadcasting in Chicago - This is kinda
cool. It's a site devoted to old radio specific to Chicago, but national stuff
is here as well. They have some cool clips. It's a good way to get an
idea of how people spoke and what was popular.
Music, Art and Culture of
the 1920's - It has sound clips and stuff. Pretty nifty site and easy to load.
RETRO: Comparing 1927
Prices With Those of Today - This is a fantastic essay that compares purchasing power
and wages of the 1920's with that of modern day. It's easy to understand and delves
a little into th economics of the era. I recommend it HIGHLY.
Crime and Punishment
American Mafia.Com - This is
the be all end all site for those of you interested in gangster/mafioso
concepts. Excellent site!
Al Capone - From the Crime
Library
Eliot Ness - From the Crime
Library - A little later than our period, but food for thought.
Da Mob - Everything you need to know about
the Chicago Outfit.
Mafia - A very
good source on the Mafia as a whole with sections on both the New York and Chicago
families.
Bootlegger's Paradise
- Another article from the Crime Library. A good example of the many gangs in the
era that are in existence outside the mob.
World of Darkness Links
WoD Stuff - A handy guide to other
Chronicles on the internet and on AOL.
De Vita In Excessum - World of Darkness
E-zine.
World
of Darkness: Gotham - Our sister Chronicle.
