The Lack of a Match ©

-- I was accompanied by Mohawk Bill one of my best man trackers, Chief
of Rib Mountain, and no others  ---- here is the story.....

Elia Cassiotti (Made up Name), the 14 year-old-son of Maria and
Salvador who were both first generation Americans of Italian descent was
enamored of a 14-year-old girl in his school who was not of Caucasian
ancestry. This I understand is not to be allowed in his family.  He was
forbidden to see her again.  Word reached his parents that he was seen
meeting her at a record store in the mall and later at a McDonald's.

This caused a complete restriction on his movements.  An older
cousin was to accompany him any time he was not in school from the
moment he left his home till he returned. This went on for weeks and was
successful.  One day he did not return home from school and neither did
the girl.  Police interviewed friends and found out that he and the girl
had arranged with a 16-year-old friend, who was allowed to drive the
family car, to meet them after school and drive them the 18 miles to the
base of the mountain range.  The boy had arranged for another friend to
hide a snowmobile in some nearby bushes.
This was beside a plowed logging road.  It was snow covered but with only
the accumulation of a few days snow.  Logging trucks had obliterated the
track of the snowmobile and we were called out.  We started the next
morning and followed his scent all day long climbing all the time.  At
3:30 p.m. we were exhausted and cleared the snow from a flat spot off the
side of the road and set up our mountain tent and moved everything
inside as well as the dog.  The small sterno stove had it warm in about an
hour.  We ate and fed the dog and were in our sleeping bags at 8 P.M.  The
next morning we were on his trail again up the mountain.  About 4:00 p.m. in the
afternoon the dog left the road and started to follow a trail to the
right.  Shortly thereafter it was obvious that a snowmobile had come this way and
packed the snow hard enough that we only broke through occasionally.  By
5:30 p.m. we were standing in front of what they call a "Line Cabin".  A cabin
positioned by the forestry Department for lost people to use.  We walked
in to find the both of them half frozen and huddled together in the
blankets provided by the Forest service.  The cabin was equipped with a
wood stove and a pile of wood next to it.  Cabinets full of dried food
and 10 one gallon jugs of water in plastic containers (Frozen solid).  No
fire was going and I inquired why, and was told "Nobody told us we had
to bring matches".  Since it was too late to start back I started a fire
and hung two of the frozen jugs on the hooks provided above the stove to
thaw them out.  By 7:00 p.m. we were eating a fine meal and drinking coffee.  We
were all in bed by 9:00 p.m.  We returned the next day to the cheers of the
gathered crowd.

Since that time, Elia has been sent by his father, to a boarding school in New York
State that is run by Christian Brothers. Poor kid, they used to call these schools, "Reform Schools".
The girl was examined at the hospital and the report is that she is
still a virgin. Thank God he didn't have matches.
