CineSight Rating ***
I have slowly grown to like Liam Neeson as an actor. I first saw him in "Darkman" and thought he really made an outrageous story idea believable. When director Bille August paired him up with Oscar-winnner Geoffrey Rush for "Les Miserables", I was hooked.
Victor Hugo's classic story, set in France, is a drama about redemption, judgment and forgiveness. It involves a cat-and-mouse pursuit between the supposedly upright mayor of a small town (Neeson) and the new police inspector (Rush), who suspects him of being a former criminal. The conflict comes to a head in the midst of revolution, as the two come face-to-face.
* Widescreen Only Format
While the DVD itself doesn't offer much in the way of additional
features, the movie is such a powerful and intimate drama, that
you don't need anything more. This gets three stars on the merits
of the film itself.
