TRAFFIC--Day
2
Objectives:
1. Listen to the Big Book: Traffic by Betsy and Guilio Maestro on cassette tape.
2. Re-read the book with student editions and orally identify the opposites on each of the pages.
3. Understand
the concept of "traffic" through a web
cam view of
New
York City.
Here
you'll see live action screen shots of traffic in Times Square. People
will be walking on the sidewalks and crossing the street. Cars and
buses will be seen passing by and stopping at stop lights.
4. Use a variety of building toys to construct a moveable vehicle.
5. Use a digital camera printout and words to illustrate their individual page in a class book that will travel home daily.
Materials:
Traffic by Betsy and
Giulio Maestro big book, individual copies and cassette, building toys,
journal
paper, pictures from digital camera.
Procedures:
Set:
Listen to the story Traffic
as the teacher turns the pages of the Big Book, pointing to the bold-faced
"opposites".
Development:
*Pass out the student editions
to share of the same book. Re-read the book orally and identify through
group discussion the opposites on each page.
*Discuss the word "traffic"
referring to the pictures in the book and relating real-life experiences
of "waiting in traffic".
*Use a web cam view of New
York City to see the traffic, people crossing streets, traffic jams.
*Divide the class into small
groups of 3 to 4, with an assortment of building toys to create and construct
their own moveable vehicle. No rules, except that it needs to move!
*Teacher will move from group
to group with a digital camera recording their vehicles.
*Children will gather as a
large group with their vehicles to demonstrate and tell about their creations.
*Use a large chart to record
how many wheels their vehicle had.
Closure:
Give each child his own journal
page, a print out from the digital camera, materials to draw and write
with. Demonstrate how to glue their vehicle on the top section and write
words on the bottom section to describe it, including how many wheels it
has. Compile all completed pages with a book binder machine to make two
books that will be checked out daily by students to go home as a traveling
class book.
Assessment:
Vehicles that they created
will be used in the play area for the remainder of the unit by everyone.
No one is allowed to disassemble them. Demonstration and completion of
their journal page.

Activities:
Cooking: Celery Carts
Materials needed:
Cleaned celery cut into 3
to 4 inch pieces, carrots cut into "rounds", peanut butter or cream cheese,
plastic knives and spoons, paper plates, raisins, small plastic cups.
Procedure:
All materials need to be assembled
at a center in advance.
Children will rotate through
groups, completing this activity on their own after directions are given
orally.
1. Take one paper plate, 2
pieces of celery, 8 carrot rounds, plastic cup of peanut butter or cream
cheese., plastic cup of raisins.
2. Go to a work table with
your ingredients.
3. Spread the peanut butter
or cream cheese with your plastic knife onto the celery.
4. Put a dab of peanut butter
or cream cheese on each carrot round.
5. Place 4 carrot rounds for
wheels onto the celery cart( 2 on each side), pressing until they stick.
6. Lay the raisins on top
of the peanut butter or cream cheese for people!
7. Enjoy eating your snack!
