Bilderberg book due out soon

----------------------------

I just found a Washington Post, 10 September 2000 article in which the following book is announced for January 2001. This would be most welcome as Bilderberg is the only private planning group about which no decent book exists...

best regards, Arjen Nijeboer "Arjen Nijeboer" <arjen.nijeboer@agora-europe.org>

New Book - 'Private Capacity'

by Renata Adler

The first serious study of the ultra-secretive Bilderberg Conferences and their role in the modern world. In 1954, a group of leaders of the Western World held a secret meeting in Holland that would lead to the formation of the Bilderberg group. That meeting included officials from the United States and from two countries, Germany and Italy, which were defeated in World War II, and which were participating for the first time on an equal basis with other European powers. Since that first meeting Bilderberg has included presidents, Prime Ministers, bankers, princes, tycoons, labor leaders, secretaries of state, NATO commanders, ambassadors, and others whose occupations are not widely known. Media barons and journalists are often invited. But only if they agree to keep secret who was there and what was said. Bilderberg has been characterized as an elite think tank or an International Establishment, an elaborate social and business network, or a conspiracy that actually runs the world.

This book addresses, for the first time, the true history of the organization, its participants and effects. With a cache of Bilderberg archives, secretly turned over to the author by a few senior leaders of the Bilderberg, the book describes the organization, and discusses who has been involved and when. It shows connections that exist and connections that--despite rumor, and a virtual obsession of the extreme left and right--do not. It explains how Bilderberg has changed, and in what ways it may have changed the world. The author also analyzes questions raised by clubs, cabals, exclusive and secret or not-secret groups of every sort.

About the Author Educated at Bryn Mawr, Harvard, the Sorbonne and Yale Law School, Renata Adler has had an unrivaled career as a reporter, novelist and short story writer. She was for many years on the staff of The New Yorker. She has also been the chief film critic of The New York Times. She won prizes for her novels, essays and short stories. She is a member of the National Academy of Arts and Letters. Her most recent book is Gone: The Last Days of the New Yorker.

A Green Critique of Globalisation

---------------------------------

Caroline Lucas MEP

There is overwhelming evidence that economic globalisation is responsible both for growing social inequalities and for unprecedented environmental damage. For example, UNCTAD's 1997 Trade and Development Report concludes that globalisation in its current form is responsible for a dramatic increase in global inequality.

In 1965, the average personal income in G7 countries was 20 times that in the seven poorest countries in the world. By 1995, the difference had become 39 times greater. Income inequalities and polarisation are growing within countries, with the income of the top 20 per cent of the population in most nations having increased significantly and disproportionately since the early 1980s.

At the same time, contrary to the claims of some that globalisation automatically leads to poverty reduction, the 1990s ended with 70 million more people in the developing world (excluding China) in poverty than at the start of the decade. In reality, of course, the obvious beneficiary of globalisation is the international corporate sector. The growth and power of transnational companies (TNCs) is both enormous and unprecedented. The result is that 47 of the top 100 economies of the world are TNCs, 70 per cent of global trade is controlled by just 500 corporations, and a mere 1 per cent of TNCs are responsible for half the total foreign direct investment in the world.

Their strength and mobility have been facilitated both by technological advances and by the progressive withdrawal of investment controls by governments and by the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

By exploiting differences in social and environmental standards between countries in order to maximise profits, TNCs are able to create global production systems over which Governments have ever less control. Democracy in Europe is also further undermined, as global corporate giants disproportionately increase the bargaining powers held by TNCs, and thereby strengthen corporate dominance in political decision making.

Corporate Control and European Integration

Few realise the extent to which both the introduction of the Single Market and the wider ongoing process of globalisation have been driven and accelerated over the past three decades by the world's leading business elites.

They share common aims, including global economic integration, deregulation, and an economic philosophy based on free trade and international competitiveness.

They have lobbied for free trade agreements such as the GATT Uruguay Round (spearheaded by the International Chamber of Commerce), the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA, promoted by the US Business Roundtable of TNCs, together with Canada's equivalent, the Business Council on National Issues) and the European Single Market and Single Currency agreements (led by the European Roundtable of Industrialists, ERT).

Indeed, the ERT has been one of the main political forces in the European Union for over a decade. It was set up with the express intention of reviving European integration and shaping it to the preferences of European TNCs. The key to its success has been the financial power of its members and hence its ready access to decision makers, both at national and at European level.

Founded in 1983, and made up of 45 highly influential captains of industry from large European transnational corporations, this little known organisation lobbied heavily for the EEC's 'internal market' in the 1980s, the 1991 Maastricht Treaty, and later the Single Currency.

Together with UNICE (the Union of Industrial and Employers' Confederations of Europe), the ERT has also lobbied extensively for the speedy enlargement of the EU towards the East. For Western corporations, the countries of Central and Eastern Europe offer an enormous market waiting to be conquered, as well as a reservoir of skilled and lower waged labour. For the ERT, enlargement is essential: "It will bring great economic benefits. These countries will bring new people, a lot of skills, technology, education, know-how. They will bring material resources including land and energy, and they will bring markets for our products."

UNICE is in no doubt that it is this latter aspect which it finds attractive. Its former Director General Zygmunt Tyszkkiewicz enthusiastically and unapologetically explains: "In the West we have mature markets. We are already consuming everything that we are able to consume. You cannot drive two cars at the same time. So we have a slow growth economy…To the East of us, we have around a hundred million people with sophisticated tastes who lack all the items we are already consuming. They need those items."

Both lobby groups insist, however, that CEE countries undergo stringent structural adjustment prior to accession. National economic policies must be harmonised with those set by the Union, and markets must be fully opened to Western goods, services, and investments. In short, governments are expected to give up control over their own economies - spelling destruction for local businesses.

And indeed these countries are now busy bringing their legislation into line with Single Market requirements, thus fulfilling the business groups' main objective: a harmonised market and liberalised investment regime for the whole of the European continent.

Meanwhile, governments of the current EU member states have wasted no time in setting out the forthcoming opportunities for their own national businesses. The UK Minister for Competitiveness in Europe, for example, has recently written of enlargement in the following terms:

"I want to be sure that British businesses are ready to seize the benefits. Competition from other member states for the commercial and other economic gains of enlargement will be intense. To be certain that your business secures the most from EU enlargement, you need to be aware of the opportunities offered, and how to exploit them."

1. Bilderberg's Magic Wand of Power

-----------------------------------

posted at http://www.bilderberg.org/bilder.htm#wand

Bilderberg, according to rumour, has an uncanny knack of inviting people who later reach very powerful public positions. Surely another one of those unprovable allegations, that the most powerful people in the world are selected or 'interviewed' for supposedly democraticly elected jobs, including heads of state, at Bilderberg.

Hard evidence of anything to do with Bilderberg policy-wise is almost impossible to get hold of. All venues are swept for bugs (not that we were using any at Genval this June!) and minutes of the steering group are definitely not publicly available.

Nevertheless... circumstancial evidence suggests Bilderberg really do have a magic wand. Take a look at the list of important career moves for the following democratic appointments:

Bill Clinton - Head of State - USA

Attends Bilderberg meeting, Germany, 1991 - gets Presidential Nomination Aug 1992

Tony Blair - Head of State - UK

Attends Bilderberg meeting, Greece, 1993 - becomes party leader Jul 1994 - becomes Prime Minister May 1997

Jack Santer - Head of State (sacked for corruption) - Europe Attends Bilderberg, Germany, 1991 - becomes European President Jan 1995

Romano Prodi - present Head of State - Europe On Bilderberg Steering Committee mid 1980's, attends Bilderberg meeting, Portugal, Jun 1999 - sworn in as President of Europe Sep 1999 (term lasts until Jan 2005)

George Robertson - CEO - NATO

Attends Bilderberg meeting, Scotland, 1998 - sworn in as Secretary General of NATO Aug 1999

A remarkable series of coincidences.

Why not see if your favourite head of state went to Bilderberg a year or two before an important success in his or her career? Why not search the attendance lists on the Bilderberg meeting pages?

http://www.bilderberg.org/1999.htm is a good place to start.

I have not dug deep for this information, a few minutes on the internet is enough to put two and two together here. They, how you say, take the piss! Bon chance!

Do please let me know if you find other Heads of State in the good old free western world world that got one of those magical Bilderberg invites, before they hit the big time.

cheers

Tony

btw - The President of the European Commission is the unelected President of Europe. For those of you that haven't been told yet the European Commission is an unelected cabinet government for a corporate controlled European superstate. This apparatus is looking decidedly fascist in its unaccountable top-down structure with policy being 'suggested' to the Commission by the European Round Table of Industrialists, a group the current Bilderberg Chairman Etienne Davignon helped found. It really is a small world.

Even MEP's will tell you their role is merely to rubber stamp directives issued by the Commission. It is verging on the critical that treaties are not signed and what admittedly imperfect national sovereignty we have left is not ceeded to such an organisation which is being given increasing power without proper accountability.

Democratic Europe yes, Corporate European Superstate no thanks very much.

EU tries to take control of trade negotiations ------------------------------------------------------- posted at http://www.bilderberg.org/2000.htm

The talks going on in the European Union, under the heading of the Inter Governmental Conference (IGC) have attracted some attention in the mainstream media, but this has centred on issues such as the expansion to the East. Little has been said about a far more important issue, the proposed changes to the EU treaty which would mean the European Commission taking over sole charge of trade negotiations.

The following letter from Caroline Lucas MEP to the Financial Times explains it.

Dear Sir

The battle over the extension of Qualified Majority Voting, highlighted in your article on the outcome of the informal Biarritz summit (France to issue guide for Nice talks, 16 October 2000), is also at the heart of a further highly controversial battle over who controls EU policies on investment, and on trade in services and intellectual property.

Changes are currently being proposed to Article 133 of the Amsterdam Treaty that would place all international trade issues under EU authority, with individual countries no longer being able to veto proposals.

Such an expansion of the Commission's powers would be a further step away from democratic control over key policy areas. The power of national veto has long been a safeguard against the Commission's over-zealous deregulation ambitions. In recent years, for example, it has successfully halted misguided ventures such as Commissioner Brittan's proposal for a EU-US free trade zone by 2010, as well as plans for a Multilateral Agreement on Investment, both of which were vetoed by France.

Far from being a piece of simple "modernisation", as Commissioner Pascal Lamy would have us believe, these latest proposals demonstrate a worrying trend towards the establishment of a US-like "fast track" negotiating mandate for the European Commission in the World Trade Organisation.

The Commission believes that, without the national veto, decision-making can be speeded up significantly - and naively hopes it could be a way of avoiding the increasing backlash to trade and investment liberalisation. However, what we need is more democracy in this headlong rush to greater globalisation, not less. Unless the unelected Commission wants Nice to be the natural successor to Seattle and Prague, it should drop these highly undemocratic and damaging proposals now.

Yours sincerely

Dr Caroline Lucas MEP, Green Party Member, Trade Committee, European Parliament

GATS: The new threat

-------------------------------------

We are on the verge of a breakthrough in public awareness of globalisation, and this is coming just in time, because now the negotiations on services at the WTO have been speeded up, and threaten to bring in many of the aspects of the Multinational Agreement on Investment.

According to Robert Vastine of the Coalition of Service Industries (the US based lobby group representing services which has been aggressively lobbying for liberalisation of services, with one of its main targets the entry of US firms into European health care!) we are where we were if the Seattle Ministerial meeting of the WTO last year had succeeded in launching a new round of comprehensive trade liberalisation negotiations. Services negotiations are being seen as the way for the WTO to restore its credibility after the battering it took at Seattle; both the European Commission and the US want to see services liberalisation, in contrast to agriculture (the other main area of current negotiations at the WTO) where arguments over the subsidies to EU farmers under the Common Agricultural Policy make progress less likely.

GATS threatens public services

It is intended to lead ultimately to the commercialisation of all public services, throughout the world; public funding is a 'trade distorting subsidy' which must be removed by successive re-negotiations of the GATS. And as with Thatcher's government in the 1980s, Blair is now leading the way, with everything from hospitals to prisons to schools being brought under private control, using a variety of methods, from the Public Private Partnerships which are being used to build new schools, prisons, hospitals, waste incinerators etc, to straightforward privatisation of existing prisons, and transfers of council housing stock. The House of Lords have just voted against the privatisation of Air Traffic Control, which was not in Labour's manifesto, and is not needed for raising public funds. No other country in the world has privatised its Air Traffic Control system, so why is New Labour doing it now?

GATS threatens ALL government regulations Commercialisation of public services is not the only threat from the GATS. ALL government regulations, at every level of government, even if they do not discrimate between domestic and foreign firms, could be subjected to a test of 'necessity'. This would mean they had to be necessary to fulfill an objective the WTO regarded as legitimate, and also that this objective could not be achieved by a measure which was less restrictive of trade. This is a gross intrusion into democratic decision making.

Resources

The World Development Movement are preparing a briefing on GATS, they have also prepared some leaflets on Global Trade Rules in the form of 'cheque books', and a briefing on Debt and Trade ('The Missing Link'). You can obtain them by phoning them free on 0800 328 2153.

The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives have just published an excellent book on GATS, by Scott Sinclair. You can order it over the internet or read a summary at http://www.policyalternatives.ca/ or contact them at Suite 410, 75 Albert St, Ottawa, ON, K1P 5E7, Canada, tel 001-613-563-1341, fax 001-613-233-1458.

Although written mainly for Canadians, it is also applicable to the rest of the world, since GATS is a global agreement.

Caroline Lucas wrote a report 'Watchful in Seattle' about a year ago, which contains a lot of information on the threats from GATS to public services, and much of it remains relevant today.

Hi All,

What an interesting meeting the Bilderbergers must have had in 1991. As well as all the usual suspects: Kissinger, Rockefeller, Carrington, Wolfenson and the rest, Bill Clinton was there still as lowly govenor of Arkansas, as was Gordon Brown now UK Chancellor. Jack Santer attended too, before his meteoric rise to the top in the United States of Europe. The Bilderberg ability to invite (or is that interview??) those destined for the worlds most powerful political posts is, to say the least, uncanny.

Does anyone know where a participant list for 1992 and years previous to 1991 might be found?????

Here it is below for your convenience - laid out in the old style by nationality (including UN/NATO as an extra country!):

If you can help with (not my) scanning mistakes or add detail to the individuals bracketed description please let me know at tony@gaia.org

This is all followed by my write up of a recent open day at Bristol Freemasons Hall. The juxtaposition of these bits of info. does not, of course, imply any connection between the Bilderberg fraternity and the Freemasons.

maybe ;-)

Tony

INSIDE BRISTOL FREEMASONS HALL

------------------------------

16-10-00 Tony Gosling

from http://www.bilderberg.org/masons.htm

The Park Street Masonic Hall was one of the 'Bristol open door' venues this year. A rare opportunity to have a poke around our city's normally forbidden freemasonic H.Q.. Most Bristolians have been walking past the old sandy-coloured building at the bottom of Park Street all their lives without knowing what the building is, let alone what might go on inside.

All masons must believe in some kind of supreme being or god. The other prerequisite is a belief in an afterlife. And they seem to have at least one 'god' on their side. Though Tony Blair promised a public register of Freemasons in the Labour Manifesto (to combat masonic police corruption) miraculously no new law has been drawn up to implement the pledge, now all but forgotten.

We were shown round by Grand Wizzard: Dr Dennis Fox, or to give him his masonic title 'Provincial Grand Master'. Bristol, we were told, is the only masonic 'province' in the country to be a city rather than a county. Masonry is, Fox explained, a mainly charitable institution. It is not a 'secret society' but a 'society with secrets'. One of the secrets that was not related to us by our guide is that the M25 road-rage murderer and cop-killer Kenneth Noye was the head of his local masonic lodge.

We were shown Bristol's main temple with its high-backed chairs at the ends, portraits of past Grand Masters along the walls and chequerboard carpet in the centre. This, we were told, is where the craft, that is the first second and third degree masons, do their ceremonies.

In the next small ante-room something called the 'ceremony of the veils' takes place we were told. The analogy is that someone who has been picked to join the higher (Royal Arch) levels of freemasonry is passing from a state of ignorance to a state of enlightenment. Only masons of a higher degree than him can part the 'veils of ignorance' so he can become 'enlightened' and be allowed into the 'Royal Arch' which is apparently the masonic 4th to 33rd degree.

Then we moved into the Royal Arch temple laid out, Dr. Fox explained, like a Synagogue with the flagpoles and pendants of the twelve tribes of Isreal in the centre. Both windowless temples were entirely free from natural light and, instead of switches, had hefty 1950's dimmer wheels by the entrances. Mason guides I asked about this gave me conflicting stories but the dimmers suggested that some of the ceremonies in the temples could be conducted in darkness, with only a few candles to see by.

In the Royal Arch temple we 40 or so masonic tourists listened to Dr Fox as he talked us through some of the aprons and other paraphernalia of the various masonic degrees. The open session that followed began with some questions about why women couldn't join. We were told they can and do join special women's Eastern Star lodges. One question to which there was no answer forthcoming though was 'what are the actual rituals you perform in here?'. Dr Fox didn't want to answer and advised us to look it up in the public library.

At one point Dr Fox mentioned a recent book purporting to link the Medieval Knights Templar with the early freemasons. This, presumably, was 'Secrets of the Lodge', by Tubal Cain (pub. Delphi). This comes up with strong evidence of continuity: banking, ritual, hidden passageways, wealth, secrecy and sunless temples are strong characteristics of both. When pressed Dr Fox denied that he has ever had any financial or 'pecuniary' advantage from his masonic connections.

During the tour there were masons posted at strategic points around the lodge to stop visitors 'wandering off'. These masons barred any exploration of the lower levels of the lodge which might reveal regalia changing rooms and passages to nearby buildings. This guesswork was partly confirmed when we were told the story of the owner of a hat shop opposite who had managed to get into the basement of the lodge and rescue some valuables when the building was bombed during world war two. The artifacts had been in the basement so how did he get in and out of a bombed building?? Not necessarily as mysterious as it might seem.

One theme in Dr Fox's commentary was the easy compatibility of Freemasonry with Christianity. A recent book 'Freemasonry, A Christian Perspective' by John Lawrence (Pub. Gazelle Books) reveals that most top-ranking Church of England clergy are masons but it draws the opposite conclusion on compatibility. So when I found myself standing next to Bristol's Grand Wizz after the tour had finished, I raised some questions.

One central Christian/masonic conflict is with the blood-oath sworn by masons. On initiation into the first degree they have to swear to keep the secrets of masonry and to always protect a fellow mason. In the sermon on the mount at Matthew 5:33 Christ advises us: 'Do not swear an oath... simply let your "yes" be "yes" and your "no" be "no", anything else comes from the devil.' When I quoted this snippet of scripture to him Dr Fox looked a little perplexed and questioned the validity of my translation. Had I read the verse in the original Hebrew? After a little thought I pointed out that Matthew was originally written in Greek, not Hebrew. Dr Fox then asked me what I would do in a court room if asked to swear on the Bible. I explained I would not swear on the Bible but quote that verse instead. He quoted a disputed verse from the end of Mark about 'thrusting one's hand into a nest of vipers' and made off.

I remain to be convinced that the freemasons are anything other than an anti-social, sexist, racist club of men who think themselves above anyone not in the club. Just look at the wealth and influence masonic accountants, solicitors, judges, magistrates, police, military officers, councillors, civil servants, bankers, barristers and businessmen have. The perfect elitist and endemically secretive 'old boy network'.

Spiritually, I found Bristol Freemasons Hall a particularly negative place, it took my fellow visitors and me several hours to recover composure in a local coffee shop after the visit. Our fear was the lodge might be a harbour for grasping men who dare not expose corrupt connections to public scrutiny.

When I politely pointed out to a Bristol magistrate who was shepherding us that masons don't have a monopoly on integrity he invited me to join. I think he missed the point.

US AGENTS PRESSED DANES TO JOIN EU

By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard in Brussels

The Daily Telegraph - Wednesday 20th September 2000

AMERICA played a key role behind the scenes in persuading the Danes to join the European Economic Community, according to declassified US government files.

The documents show that Washington sought to exert influence on key figures in the Danish political establishment after the war, while funding and directing European federalist groups.

Washington exerted its influence through the American Committee on a United Europe, a US intelligence front chaired by Gen William Donovan, former head of the US Office of Strategic Services, precursor of the CIA.

The files show that Jens Otto Krag, the prime minister who took Denmark into the Common Market in 1972, was a guest of the Bilderberg Group, a network of influential US and European figures who met each year to promote European integration and free trade along lines desired by Washington.

The Bilderberg group has since changed its character dramatically. Many of its participants are now Euro-sceptic and America has mixed feelings about closer European integration. [Just take a look at what core Bilderberg people like Kenneth Clarke and Etienne Davignon are saying - they are in fact lobbying extremely hard for the euro - bear in mind this article appeared in Bilderberg arch-duke Conrad Black's personal rag! ed.]

The Danish government said it would block the European Union's Nice Treaty in December rather than give way on any proposals that erode national control over tax, labour and welfare policy.

The move came as a Gallup poll showed opponents of the euro 12 points ahead a week before the referendum on adopting the currency.

Greetings Elite watchers,

Grattan Healy, energy adviser to the Green Party in the European Parliament, has prepared a full index - sorted by country - of Bilderberg participants from 1988 to 2000 (missing out 1990 but adding 1982). This valuable database includes a list of those Elitists that modestly describe themselves as International participants.

Below is the UK list, minus the venues and dates attended - the first section is for the real heavyweights - steering gp. members etc.

You can also now 'Explore the world of the western Elite'. Many of this year's Bilderberg participants have been linked directly to pages giving further information about themselves and the companies they work for plus cheezy photos etc!!!

The 'explore' section and national lists can be found on Grattan's main Bilderberg 2000 page; http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/grattan_healy/Bilderberg.html

ADIOS, for now

Tony

1. Blowing the lid on the Bilderbergers - Tony Gosling [Bilderberg meeting 2000, Genval, Brussels]
2. Elite Coup - Grattan Healy [Bilderberg and Trilateral Commission members in the European Commission]

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blowing the lid on the Bilderbergers

09Jun00 - Bristol - Tony Gosling

Euro-Green party researcher Grattan Healy and I tuck into dinner in the bar of Genval’s five-star Chateau du Lac hotel, just outside Brussels. For once, our minds are not on the food. Rather, how to figure out whether or not the super-secretive Bilderberg club will tomorrow have this hotel sealed off for their notorious annual meeting.

Bilderberg takes it’s name from a hotel in Holland where their first secret transatlantic conference took place back in 1954. Original chairman and founder of the club, ex-SS Nazi Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands owned the place. Bilderberg’s ‘steering group’ boasts the wealthiest bankers and industrialists in the western world, no less.

Grattan’s research has shown how elite clubs like Bilderberg and the Trilateal Commission are managing somehow to install more of their members as European Commissioners, at the policy-making heart of Europe. And more recently links have been exposed with powerful European policymakers ERT, European Round Table of industrialists. The current Bilderberg chairman founded it. Green MEP Patricia McKenna has been getting embarrassing questions asked down at the European Union’s policy rubber stamping department, the Parliament.

As for me, I’m curious to see these Bilderbergers in the flesh for the first time after having researched their activities on and off for four years or so. Being stony broke I’ve got to Brussels from Bristol mostly by skipping trains. It’s got to be the right place after all that effort.

During a snoop round the hotel interior Grattan spots a sign pointing to a ‘Steering Committee Meeting’ meeting. A deliberate hoax? We’ll just have to find out in the morning.

Mike Peters, Marxist Sociology lecturer from Leeds, who has written one of the most comprehensive studies to date on the Bilderbergers, flew into Brussels late that evening Wednesday 31st June. Another chancer.

Arriving at the ‘Chateau’ the next morning we notice rear entrances have been padlocked and chained. Around the front, the mock-Florentine lobby has a rude addition, a white canvas entrance tunnel and drive-in awning has sprung up overnight. Is this to protect chauffeur-driven guests from the rain on this cloudless day...? or from prying eyes. This is no bum-steer, The Spotlight’s got the place all right.

This sometimes seemingly zenophobic right-wing American magazine seems to be the only media that consistently follows Bilderberg activities and the only source for where the meeting will be held. It's not difficult for the Bilderbergers PR people to discredit such a source.

About four the limos begin arriving. The shiny black Mercedes’ with their characteristic ‘B’ clearly displayed in the front windscreen. We can just see into the awning and film most of the participants as they emerge from the backs of the limos. Doormen attempt to hold makeshift curtains up to conceal the more sensitive guests. We manage mostly to film them between the gaps.

We have a chat with photographer and reporter for The Spotlight. What a sincere, concerned pair they seem, and we had been told Spotlight were neo-nazis. Chilling to think that without the bloodhound work of writer Jim Tucker no-one but the participants would know this meeting was taking place.

‘But we send out a press release...’, the Bilderberg office bleat if you bother to complain. What they don’t tell you is that you have to request it from the hotel (how is anyone supposed to know where to call?) and they only release it as everybody’s leaving. Too late for the press.

Thursday 1st June is a bank holiday in Belgium. Families are out in the sun, taking a stroll round the lovely Genval lake, almost oblivious to the capitalist power-players emerging from limos feet away inside the awning.

The regulars are arriving, Conrad Black, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Kenneth Clarke, David Rockefeller, James Wolfenson, president of the World Bank.

The new Chairman, Viscount Etienne Davignon, comes out to get what, we joke, looks like a bag of drugs from his car. He owns most of the public utilities and one of the biggest banks in Belgium. ‘Will you be holding a press conference Mr Davignon?’ Grattan shouts, ‘I don’t think so’ Davignon replies. ‘Why not’. ‘We don’t have enough important things to say’.

Capitalism's heavyweights are rolling up. ‘Who’s that?’ ‘It’s Jean-Claude Trichet’. ‘Who’s he?’ ‘The next boss of the European Central Bank’..He obviously won’t have anything important to say either... ‘What about this one?’ ‘That’s Daniel Vasella, CEO of Novartis with William McDonough, president of the Federal Reserve bank of New York’ ‘That one’s the boss of the Washington Post and hey, there goes George Soros! Look, it’s one of the new European Commissioners, Pascal Lamy!’ This looks like an elite to me.

Another brand-new Merc. arrives. An aloof looking guest turns away from the cameras. We look at each other and shake our heads, another one we don’t recognise. One of us calls out to him: ‘Are you a big shit sir?’

The passing Belgian public are hanging around, they seem spellbound by the line of polished black Mercs. ‘What’s going on?’, they keep asking, in French, as we prepare for the next arrival. ‘It’s Bilderberg’. They nod in reply, as if they know what we mean, then shuffle off looking puzzled.

Untouchable elite types swinging out of limos next to a busy public road and footpath. Clearly an uptight securityman’s nightmare. Men with bulging sweaters or badly-fitting jackets wearing dark glasses walk back and forth. Ah, that’ll be the plain clothes Belgian secret service with their guns then. I ask one if he knows what’s going on at the hotel, ‘I don’know’, he smiles, baring rat-like teeth. He’s not a good actor, glad I can’t see his eyes. A big CIA officer turns up and orders the Belgians around, they know their place.

This year’s Bilderberg had to be hastily rearranged after the Austrian anti-EU ‘Freedom Party’ was elected hence we and the public are so close by. We might never get this opportunity again. If they had met as planned in Austria there would probably have been official criticism and heaps of publicity. For a cabal all publicity is bad publicity.

Bilderberg does everything it can to conceal where it’s meeting and doesn’t bother with a press conference any more. Okay, out the window go journalistic freedoms which are the lynch pin of any democracy. Inside, media barons and compliant writers from The Economist, sworn to secrecy, smooch year after year.

They have created a vacuum. We decide to get on the telephone.

On Saturday morning Belgian daily ‘De Morgen’ delivered the goods with a lead front page story by the ex-editor all about the no longer quite so secret Bilderberg conference. Critical and amusing coverage on national Belgian TV news and in papers and satirical magazines followed into the week. In stead of being secret the conference was one of the big stories of the week. In Belgium.

When the national papers phoned the mayor of the local Genval principality he said they must be joking! If Queen Beatrix and Henry Kissinger were there he’d know about it. Bilderberg, it seems, is above politics.

Politicians, newspaper editors, European commissioners and civil servants who agree to enter Bilderberg swear complete secrecy. Not just about the content of the meeting but about the very existence of Bilderberg. They leave their accountability at the door. Have the bankers grown so arrogant that they now see democratic institutions and public opinion simply as competition to be taken out.

Just as the Bilderbergers were leaving on the Saturday two secret service asked the Spotlight photographer to show a Belgian press pass then threatened to beat him up. They chased him into a nearby taverna where he was rescued by boss and waiters only to be chased again at the local station. He made a narrow escape by running across the tracks to jump on a train going the wrong way. Surreal.

Was someone about to leave the hotel they didn’t want him snapping? Clinton was in Aachen that day, just down the road. Bilderberg have been shown to accidentally leave heads of government off the official attendance list before. Just one question we wanted to ask at the press conference that never was.

Bilderberg stretches our credulity, particularly when their habitually anonymous supporters use angry disinformation, mud-slinging and ‘guilt by association’ in a shabby attempt to discredit critics.

According to the hotel, this year’s meeting was a croquet tournament ‘with some well-known spectators’. Another cover story was that the French football team were staying. Even the security name tags said Brussels 2000, just like the football.

These power-brokers lie too easily. The more facts that emerge about Bilderberg’s key role in lobbying for a corporate controlled Europe and the more lies they disseminate to try to cover themselves the more healthy suspicion they arouse.

Why, for example, might Tony Blair have said in answer to a parliamentary question by Christopher Gill MP in March 1998 that no members of his cabinet had attended Bilderberg meetings, when he himself clearly was on the official Athens conference list in 1993 before becoming Labour leader? His attendance was even commented on by William Rees-Mogg in The Times! The Danish parliament is considering banning all politicians from attending.

So who’s in charge? The bankers or the politicians? What about the proverb that says ‘the borrower is servant to the lender’? Can Bilderberg politicians like Clarke, Blair and Mandelson be trusted? And are the governments of the world now just PR and tax managers for the banks?

There simply has to be a thorough international examination of this private little bankers’ club that has toes in so many political doors. And we must catch up on the right’s ability to cut through complex-sounding economics gibberish. They have taken the lead on Bilderberg because they understand the power of the bankers far better than we do on the left.

Economic priorities detrimental to ordinary people in the west, not to mention the developing world, are pushed forward at Bilderberg by the ruling class, those who have more influence than anyone else over the future, in total secret. It’s time to call this elite cabal to account and ensure their meetings are fully scrutinised.

ELITE COUP

3.9.99, rev 2.3.2000

Grattan Healy

[Written after the appointment of a new European Commission in Spring 1999 - Incidentally the original commission were sacked by the Parliament on the Ides of March 1999 ed.]

The situation as I see it is that the 'global elite' have performed yet another coup. They have so far had many of their people elected to high office - Bill Clinton, Lionel Jospin, Tony Blair, as well as Jacques Santer, Wim Duisenberg (now head of the European Central Bank), and many others.

Romano Prodi was a Steering Committee Member of the Bilderberg Group in the 80s - I have a copy of their booklet from 1982, which incidentally also shows that Wim Duisenberg was the then Treasurer. What is noticeable that Prodi has limited the declarations of his Commissioners to 10 years, something not done in the previous Commission, and so has allowed himself not to declare this former highly sensitive role.

Since the head man is a member of the elite, it should be no surprise that he has nominated 7 other elite members (and incidentally 4 others suspected of involvement in fraud!). These 7 are:

As result of Parliamentary questions from Patricia McKenna, Irish Green MEP, Mario Monti has now formally declared that he was a former Steering Commitee member of Bilderberg ('83-'93) and implies that he is also a former Executive Committee member of the Trilateral Commission, as well as council of the Aspen Institute. However, he was still present until recently on the Trilateral homepage - http://www.trilateral.org/memb.htm, and was in both the '92 and '98 membership lists; he said in an EP answer that he was a member of the Executive committee of the Trilateral Commission (Europe), from 1988 to 1997, which is not what he was asked about.

Erikki Liikanen attended Bilderberg last June in Sintra, Portugal, according to the the official press list circulated, and reported in Portuguese newspaper, The News Weekly (link out of date - http://the-news.net/archives/bilburglist05-6.htm, but the list is at: http://www.tlio.demon.co.uk/bilder.htm)

According to his declaration, Frits Bolkestein is to remain a Member of the Royal Institute of International Affairs (or Chatham House, in London), originally established by Cecil Rhodes, and responsible for establishing the Council on Foreign Relations in the USA (the other major elite group which includes all senior political and administrative figures in the USA, also including the President). He does not mention his participation in the Bilderberg Group in Toronto in 1996, the first time where their list was widely circulated, and it can be found at http://www.tlio.demon.co.uk/bilder.htm.

Pedro Solbes Mira declares his membership of the Trilateral Commission since 1996 (quote: "I.1.2 Posts currently held

Member of the Spanish section of the Trilateral Commission (since 1996)", but fails to mention that he is on the Steering Committee, (their homepage doesn't mention that he is a Commissioner either: "Pedro Solbes, Member of the Spanish Parliament; former Minister of Finance and of Agriculture, Madrid", or his participation in Bilderberg last year. He is apparently scheduled to go to the June Swiss meeting this year.

Gunther Verheugen doesn't mention his participation in Bilderberg in 1995 in Bürgenstock, Switzerland (see again http://www.tlio.demon.co.uk/bilder.htm)

Chris Patten says that while he was Governor of Hong Kong he had many memberships of charitable organisations, but we cannot regard his membership of the Trilateral Commission in this way (he is on their official list from March '98), and he doesn't list it is a current membership either.

Finally, Antonio Vitorino does not decalre that he attended Bilderberg in 1996 (see again http://www.tlio.demon.co.uk/bilder.htm).

Bilderberg claims to have no formal membership as such, but has a list of 120 or so invitees which changes slightly from year to year, refelecting a sort of changing membership. It has a core group, reflected in the Steering Committee.

Either way, in the spirit of openness, and also the written answers from Commissioners like Liikanen (http://www.europarl.eu.int/dg2/hearings/pdf/com/answer/liikanen/en/default.pdf), proposing the declaration of all political roles (in answer to a Green question), I would have thought these rather important roles should be mentioned. (see the Commissioners declarations at http://europa.eu.int/comm/commissioners/interests/index_en.htm)

PRESS RELEASE

BILDERBERG MEETINGS

3 June 2000

The 48th Bilderberg meeting was held in Brussels, Belgium, 1-3 June 2000. Among other subjects the Conference discussed US Elections, Globalisation, New Economy, the Balkans, EU Enlargement, the European Far Right. Approximately 100 participants from North America and Europe attended the discussions. The meeting was private in order to encourage frank and open discussion. [why then are all participants also told not to refer even to the fact they have attended?]

Bilderberg's only activity is its annual conference. [apart from the steering group which meets between conferences] ....... There are usually about 120 participants of whom about two-thirds come from Europe and the balance from North America. About one-third are from government and politics, and two thirds from finance, industry, labor, education, communications. [I see no representatives of trades unions here at all, ed.]

Participants have agreed not to give interviews to the press during the meeting. In contacts with the news media after the conference it is an established rule that no attribution should be made to individual participants of what was discussed during the meeting.

There will be no press conference. A list of participants is appended.

!!!!!ALL ARE INVITED TO JOIN THE WELCOMING COMMITTEE THAT IS GOING TO BE THERE!!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chairing this meeting will almost certainly be Viscount Etienne Davignon who chaired last year in Sintra, Portugal for the first time. Here are just some of the positions held by this highly influential man, as unelected as he is unknown to the general public.

New Bilderberg chairman - Viscount Etienne Davignon

Vice-Chair of the European Commission in the 1980's, Viscount Etienne Davignon is Chairman of Societe Generale De Belgique - massive banking and utility conglomerate in Belgium. He is also Chair of the shadowy European Round Table of Industrialists, who formulate policy for the European Commission to implement. Not suprising then that most of the directives coming out of Europe are monopolistic and pro big business.

Davignon is a founder member of and President of AMUE, the Association for the Monetary Union of Europe as well as being a member of David Rockefeller's Trilateral Commission, The European Institute in Washington and a Director of Anglo American mining.

In his position as Industry Commissioner in the 1980's Davignon was instrumental in turning European Institutions from supporting small business to supporting big business. He did this by getting European Industrialists, through the ERT, to draft Euro-policy, an anti-democratic practice continued to this day.

Showdown with secret power groups

By Jens Kerte

The Net version Saturday Mars 18th 2000

Politiken Sunday:

Danish ministers and top civil servants must have a prohibition against participating in secret masonic-like meeting, the Party List of Unity means. The Party List of Unity has proposed a bill of decision in the Danish Parlament. (quote) "In such secret meetings – as the meting of the Bilderberg Group – the power brokers coordinate their views and cover up for each other", Frank Aaen from the Party List Of Unity means, and says : "when it takes place in deepest secrecy it is a scandal that ministers at high level has participated without any democratic insight".(unquote) More members of the EURO-Parlament and Folketinget (The Danish Parlament) insist on that the participation of Danish ministers and European Commissioners in high political discussions in the yearly, closed conferences of the private, so-called Bilderberg Group beeing brought to light.

Ritt and Uffe

For the last few years both the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of (the Party) Liberal Left Uffe Ellemann-Jensen and the former EU-Commissioner Ritt Bjerregaard (the Socialdemocratic Party) have participated in these two-days conferences, where the participants are instructed confidentiality.

Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen (the Socialdemocratic Party) gives an answer to one of the written questions on this matter, …that there have never been any decision of the government about Bilderberg.

On this background among other things the Prime Minister says that he does not see any (quote) "basis to criticise, if Danish ministers have participated in the so-called Bilderberg Meetings." (unquote)

Several invited to the Bilderberg Meetings Uffe Ellemann-Jensen has since 1984 been present at the confidential discussions of Bilderberg eight times the information of Politiken shows, while Ritt Bjerregaard participated as newly fledged EU-Commissioner Of Environment in 1995. All in all a dozen of Danish ministers have participated since the first meeting in 1954.

Neither Uffe Ellemann-Jensen nor Ritt Bjerregaard briefed the Tribunal Of Foreign Affairs or their Parlamentary Chiefs about their participation.

Unformal discussions

Their comments to Politiken is the following: (quote) "There was no need caused by the simple reason that there was no talk of that Denmark in any way was getting bound of the unformal debate", (unquote) says Uffe Ellemann-Jensen.

"I have not briefed anybody about my participation, because Bilderberg is a Think Tank that cannot make any decisions at all. There is no basis of being concerned about that people meet and talk to each other" (unquote), says Ritt Bjerregaard.

Seven of the present 20 EU-Commissioners have during the last few years been connected to Bilderberg, and in the EURO-Parlament The Greens have been working for, that these relations now is broad to the public knowledge.

The commisioners in question continuing deny to tell, what they have been discussing on the Bilderberg meetings.

The Bilderberg Meeting started in 1954 as a forum for secret political discussions between topfolks within Politics, Finances and Industry from the NATO-members. 28Feb00 - Bilderberg 2000 to be in Swizerland 1st to 4th June?

According to the Vienna Newspaper "KURIER" , Friday, 25th February 2000 due to the participation of the FPÖ (Jörg Haider) Party in the government, the "Bilderberg" meeting will not be in Austria on 1st to 4th June but in Switzerland. The date will probably be the same since it will be difficult for such a lot of important people to change their timetable.

The newspaper continues and explains that Bill Clinton will participate as well as the NATO Secretary General George Robertson. Minister for Northern Ireland and Blair clone Peter Mandelson, EU-Commissioner Pedro Solbes. The CEO of Monsanto, Xerox and Goldman-Sachs and Fiat-Boss Agnelli. The editors of Washington Post and Economist will attend but not (as usual) mention the fact in their respective publications.

Etienne Davignon, the new Bilderberg Chairman will preside.

In the beginning of 1985 Davignon joined Société Générale de Belgique, Belgium's leading holding company of which he became Chairman on the 11th April 1989. Mr. Davignon is a member of the Board of the Générale de Banque, Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux, BASF, ICL, Solvay, Kissinger Associates and several S.G.B. group companies. He became Chairman of the Association for the Monetary Union of Europe on May 30, 1991. As member of the European Round Table of Industrialists (ERT), he chairs the working group on Trade and Investment. He is a Chairman of the Paul-Henri Spaak Foundation and the Royal Institute for International Relations. Pictures of James Wolfensohn (Worldbank), Carld Bildt (UN - Special envoy to former Yugoslavia ???), Jean-Claude Trichet (Vicepresident of European Central Bank) and Norbert Zimmermann (Berndorf Company - Austria). It later declares that last year in Portugal there was ex-Chancellor Franz Vranitzky and Director General of Bank Austria: Gerhard Randa. It further states that the "Bilderbergers" meet once a year in a hotel. The talks are not made public, which has given the Bilderbergers the reputation of being a secret society. In reality real powerful people speak three days on the future of the world in all frankness but why not for the press? The meeting can be compared to the meeting in Davos only much more secretive and with the highest players in global capitalism involved. The greater discretion allows the participating politicians and economic captains to even speak more frankly with each others on subjects which, if heard by the general public could be explosive!

The newspaper is lamenting that due to the new Austrian government also other meetings especially the meeting of the European Investmentbank (the EU house-bank) most probably will not be in Vienna.

What are these Bilderberg Conferences all about?

TG 08Feb00 - The Bilderberg Secretariat proclaims the conferences to be '...private in order to encourage frank and open discussion'. Frank and open discussion is a good thing in any forum but when those doing the discussing are some of the very most powerful financiers and media tycoons in the world it begs the question: If what they discuss is for the good of mankind why not publicise it!  Isn't it a perverted use of the word 'open' when no-one can hear what they're saying?

Is Bilderberg a secret conspiracy?

When such rich and powerful people meet up in secret, with military intelligence managing their security, with hardly a whisper escaping of what goes on inside, people are right to be suspicious. But the true power of Bilderberg comes from the fact that participants are in a bubble, sealed off from reality and the devastating implications on the ground of the black-science economic solutions on the table. The world's leading financiers and foreign policy strategists don't get together at Bilderberg to draw up their secret plans for the future. It's subtler than that. These meetings create an artificial 'consensus' to spellbind visiting politicians and and other men of influence. It's about reinforcing - often to the very people who are on the edge of condemning Globalisation - the illusion that Globalisation is 'good' and that it is inevitable.

So is Bilderberg a conspiracy? No, it's an extremely influential lobbying group. That's not to say though that the organisers don't have a hidden agenda, they do, namely acumulation of wealth and power into their own hands whilst explaining to the participants that globalisation is for the good of all. It is also a very good forum for 'interviewing' potential future political figures such as Clinton and Blair (1993).

The ideology put forward at the Bilderberg conferences is that what's good for banking and big business is good for the people of the world. Silently banished are the critical voices, those that might point out that debt is spiralling out of control, that wealth is being sucked away from ordinary people and into the hands of the faceless corporate institutions, that millions are dying as a direct result of the Rockefeller/Rothschild economic strategies.

When looking at one of the partially reliable participant lists it should be remembered that quite a number of attendees are invited in an attempt to get them on-board the globalisation project. These are carefully selected people of influence, who have been openly critical of globalisation. Examples are Jonathan Porritt (Bilderberg 1999) and Will Hutton (Bilderberg 1997) but there are many others. Most of these kinds of participants are happy to speak about the conference afterwards, and may even be suprisingly critical.

The Bilderbergers are accepted by those 'in the know' as the prophets of Capitalism. Will Hutton, deputy Editor of The Observer newspaper in London and left-leaning Economist, described private clubs of the elite as masterminded by 'The High Priests of Globalisation'. The ecclesiastical allusion is not accidental. The Bilderberg high-priests are a force against good, out to wipe morality from the earth. For the organisers Bilderberg Conferences are an annual ideological assault by the world's most power-hungry people. Not content with owning unimaginable amounts of money and property they want to use that wealth to acquire even more power for themselves. Power is the most dangerous and addictive drugs known to man. The craving will only be satisfied when a handful of men own and control everything on earth.

And just like the Nazi party in the 1930's the global Capitalist Elite are rising in power by peaceful means. There are some extremely worrying connections between Bilderberg and the Nazis through the Conference's founder Prince Bernhard.

These crown princes of capital use violence at the sharp end - the destruction of dissent - the repossession of homes men and women have worked a lifetime for - needless deaths from starvation and geopolitical machinations - this violence is notable by its absence from the annual meetings.

One can't help but wonder, when the Bilderberg organisers, Rothschild, Rockefeller, Kissinger and the rest have completed their project of enclosing all global goods and services into their own hands, enclosing too the media to stop people freely discussing what they are up to. What then?? What happens when the men who would be gods turn out to be the global devils?

Who is behind Bilderberg?

Bilderberg is run by a Steering Group - if you're wondering who's responsible for so much of the capital-friendly and dissent-crushing law-making, poverty and general misery in the world this may be the place to look. Up-to-date lists are available from the Bilderberg Secretariat. This is the closest approximation to a shadow world government. And this is another hidden agenda at Bilderberg.

There may be other groups pulling the strings behind even the Steering Group possibly even high degree occult groups such as The Masons or Illuminati! [eg.] There must certainly be some sociopathic minds behind Bilderberg since they go to so much trouble to promote policies that lead to exploitation, inequality and despair. These individuals seem oddly switched off from the suffering they are causing. Surely only pernicious people would want to control the ideology of the world's mainstream press, and undermine natural political discourse. Public opinion and democratic institutions are a threat when you want to own the world.

The perverse objective of the Bilderberg Steering Group is to dress totalitarian corporate ideology up to appear rational and push it out for mass consumption without anyone knowing where these 'inevitable' ideas have come from. Meanwhile, outside the Bilder-bubble, globalisation is on the loose with free-reign to destroy our Earth and our spirit.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DAVOS CONFERENCE - 27th January 2000

EXTERMINATE!

from SchNEWS Issue 243, Friday 14th January, 2000 at www.schnews.org.uk

'The World Economic Forum is an independent, impartial, non profit foundation which acts in the spirit of entrepreneurship in the global public interest to further public interest to further economic growth and social progress'. World Economic Forum.

Yet again, unaccountable, un-elected, representatives from the corporate world of industry, political leaders, media moguls, and academics will sit behind closed doors to discuss the future of the global economy and the fate of the planet and it's people, in what has been coined, 'The Summit of Summits'.

The 30th meeting of the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) will be held from January 27th to February 1st, in the winter resort of Davos, Switzerland.

The 2,000 self-proclaimed "Global Leaders" have chosen the theme for this meeting as 'New Beginnings: Making a Difference', or in lay terms, 'New Exploitations: Making a Profit.'

When it was founded in 1971,the WEF was just a boring old management seminar. Now it has become one of the most important "think tanks" of the global economy. After the failure of the Millenium Round in Seattle (SchNEWS 240) the meeting in Davos will have a special significance. The WEF could once again come to the rescue. In the eighties, WEF provided the backbone to the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, the nasty negotiations that led to the founding of the World Trade Organization, the global institution we all love to hate!

The WEF web-site boasts: 'We are moving from a world of territorial states to a world of different layers of authority...The Foundation Members of the World Economic Forum are the 1000 foremost global companies in the world today...One of our new "initiatives" is the Centre for the Global Agenda.

This new orientation also encompasses our Centre for Regional Strategies, which will provide our members with privileged opportunities to have an impact on policy making in the worlds most important regions'.

But is this not just another arm of corporate control, bypassing and over-riding existing legislation and policies that often have an environmental and generally humane backbone, to make way for bigger corporate profits? Demos are planned for the 29th January. Meet Davos train station 3 pm. Check out the WEF web-site www.weforum.org/
