Henry Mullins of Wilkes County, North Carolina and Rockcastle County, KY

2. HENRY2 MULLINS (RICHARD1) was born Abt. 1740 in Virginia, and died in Rockcastle Co., KY2. He married MARY "POLLY" TERRY October 06, 1760 in Virginia3. She was born Abt. 1746 in Virginia, and died Aft. 1830 in Rockcastle Co., KY4.

It is not known when Henry arrived in Wilkes County - he first appears in the Wilkes County records in 1778 when he entered 100 acres along the Reddies River, Wilkes County Deed Book A1, page 184. He is on the Wilkes tax records for 1782, 85, 86, 87, 88 and 97. He is also on the 1787 and 1800 Wilkes County census. Henry purchased 100 acres from William Owen in Pittsylvania Co., VA on 25 March 1773, witnesses were Wm. Alford, Wm. Dudley, Betty Vess and Elizabeth Alford. The Mullins families came to Kentucky in 1803/04.

Mary was believed to be the daughter of Benjamin Terry and Elizabeth Irby, but their daughter married William Rybun on 30 August 1773. At this time it is not known who Mary's parents were. Some researchers have interpreted Mary's surname as Tony. I have seen the hand written records and although it is hard to read I have transcribed it and believe the name to be Terry. Supporting this is the fact that Mary and Henry named one of their sons Terry and one Champness.

3. WINEFRED3 MULLINS (HENRY2, RICHARD1) was born March 30, 1766 in Halifax Co., VA5, and died February 26, 1842 in Rockcastle Co., KY5. She married DAVID OWEN December 20, 1780 in Wilkes Co., NC6. He was born September 21, 1759 in Halifax Co., VA7, and died 1822 in Rockcastle Co., KY7.

Paul W. Gregory, a retired genealogist and author of "Early Settlers of the Reddies River" agrees that all the evidence indicates that Winefred is the daughter of Henry and Mary Mullins. They are the only Mullins family living near the William Owen farm in Wilkes County. Henry's property was adjacent to that of William Owen II. Even though no actual documentation has been found to support Winefred's parentage, the evidence is very compelling that she is the daughter of Henry Mullins and Mary "Polly" Terry.

David Owen served for three years in the North Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War. He was in Col. Benjamin Cleveland's Company at the Battle of King's Mountain on 7 October 1780. He served under Col. Daniel Morgan at the Battle of Cowpens on 17 January 1781. He also served with Captain William Lenoir in and around Wilkes County, NC. David and Winefred moved their family from Wilkes County to Rockcastle County, KY in 1803. The name Owen became Owens after the move to Kentucky.

4. TERRY3 MULLINS (HENRY2, RICHARD1) was born Abt. 1767 in Halifax Co., VA, and died in Rockcastle Co., KY8. He married LUCY BALLENGER Abt. 1798 in North Carolina. She was born July 27, 1780 in Wilkes Co., NC9, and died September 11, 1830 in Rockcastle Co., KY9.

Terry was probably born in Halifax County, VA. It is not known when he came to Wilkes County, NC - his father, Henry Mullins first appears in 1778, and Terry is shown on the 1797 Wilkes tax records and the 1800 census. Terry sold 50 acres in Ashe County, NC to Samuel Wilkerson on 19 May 1800. This sale is recorded in Ashe County Deed Book A, page 429. It appears that Terry, his brothers Champion, Spencer and Gardner, along with his parents Henry and Mary Mullins moved to Kentucky ca. 1803/4.

5. SPENCER3 MULLINS (HENRY2, RICHARD1) was born Abt. 1775 in Pittsylvania Co., VA10, and died May 01, 1853 in Rockcastle Co., KY11. He married MARY KING Abt. 1800 in North Carolina, daughter of EDWARD KING and FELICIA LEWIS. She was born Abt. 1785 in Wilkes Co., NC12, and died Aft. 1860 in Rockcastle Co., KY13.

Spencer Mullins moved to Kentucky about 1803/4. He was on the 1805 Knox Co., KY Tax list and the 1815 Rockcastle Co., tax list. His death is listed in Rockcastle Co., KY vital statistics - film 216.839. His parents are shown as Henry and Polly Mullins. Spencer, his father, along with brothers, Terry and Champness are on the 1797 Wilkes Co., NC tax lists and the 1800 Wilkes Co., NC Federal Census. Spencer died of "dropsy."

During the Revolutionary War, Mary's father, Edward King, enlisted in the 10th Regiment, NC Militia, in Wilkes Co., NC in 1778, and served under Col. Abraham Shepherd for nine months. He enlisted again in 1782 in the same regiment and served until the end of the war.

6. CHAMP/CHAMPNESS3 MULLINS (HENRY2, RICHARD1) was born Abt. 1778 in Wilkes Co., NC, and died in Rockcastle Co., KY16. He married ELIZABETH CALLOWAY Abt. 1797 in Wilkes Co., NC. She was born Abt. 1785 in North Carolina, and died Aft. 1850 in Rockcastle Co., KY.

Champ is on the 1797 Wilkes County, NC tax lists along with his father, Henry, and brothers Terry and Spencer. They are all on the 1800 Wilkes County census. He and the rest of his family appear to have migrated from Wilkes County ca. 1803/04 to what is now Rockcastle Co., KY. The 1810 Rockcastle Co., KY census shows he had 3 males under 10, 1 male 10 to 16, and 1 male 26 to 45. He had 1 female under 10, 1 female 10 to 16, and 1 female 26 to 45.

On 6 April 1850, in Rockcastle Co., KY, Elizabeth, to support a pension claim by the heirs of David and Winefred Mullins Owen, gave affidavit, attesting to David Owen's service in the Revolutionary War. She stated that she was a close neighbor of David and Winefred. Elizabeth was Winefred's sister in law.

7. GARDNER3 MULLINS (HENRY2, RICHARD1) was born Abt. 1780 in Wilkes Co., NC, and died Aft. 1840 in Rockcastle Co., KY. He married HANNAH ELIZA DENNIS November 15, 1809 in Madison Co., KY17. She was born Abt. 1790 in Kentucky.

Gardner and his wife are shown on the 1810 Rockcastle Co., KY census with 1 male under 10, 1 male 16 to 26, 1 male 16 to 45, and 1 over 45. 1 female 10 to 16, 1 female 16 to 26, 1 female 26 to 45, and 1 over 45. On the 1820 Rockcastle Co., KY census he has 1 male under 10, 1 male 16 to 26, 1 male 25 to 45. 2 females under 10, 1 female 10 to 16, and 1 female 26 to 45. He is also on the 1830 and 1840 census. One son, Jackson R. is identified on Rockcastle Co., KY Vital Statistic Microfilm No. 216.839.

8. MORTON4 OWEN (WINEFRED3 MULLINS, HENRY2, RICHARD1) was born February 19, 1787 in Wilkes Co., NC18, and died Bef. 1840 in Rockcastle Co., KY19. He married ELIZABETH "BETTY" FARRIS January 16, 1806 in Lincoln Co., KY20. She was born Abt. 1785 in Lincoln Co., KY21, and died Aft. 1860 in Rockcastle Co., KY22.

Morton and his wife, Betty Farris were named in a letter written by Granville Owens (1866-1941) on 7 March 1938. He is also listed in the Revolutionary War Pension Records as being David's son. Morton served in the War of 1812, enlisting in Captain William Smith's Company on 18 September 1812. This Company was formed in Rockcastle County, Kentucky and was active in the "Battle of the Thames" in Ontario, Canada on 5 October 1813. His brothers, Allen, Martin and Samuel served in Capt. Johnston Dysart's Co.

In 1880 Martha and her daughter, Elizabeth, were living with her sister, Mary and her husband, William Cummins. In 1900 she is living with her daughter, Elizabeth and her husband, Andrew Jackson Sutton.

9. ALLEN4 OWEN (WINEFRED3 MULLINS, HENRY2, RICHARD1) was born December 24, 1793 in Wilkes Co., NC30, and died September 28, 1847 in Parke Co., IN31. He married MARY "POLLY" KILBOURN November 09, 1815 in Pulaski Co., KY32. She was born Abt. 1798 in Pulaski Co., KY33, and died Abt. 1874 in Pine Hill, Rockcastle Co., KY34.

Allen served as a private in the 11th Regiment, Kentucky Mounted Volunteers, Captain Johnston Dysart's Company during the War of 1812. This Company was heavily engaged in the "Battle of the Thames" in Ontario Canada on 5 October 1813. He served from August 1813 until November 1813. Allen is listed as one of David Owen's son in the Revolutionary War Pension Records.

In April 1855, Mary applied for a pension and land grants on Allen Owens' War of 1812 service records. She was awarded a pension which was $8.00 per month at the time of her death in 1874. She was also given two land warrants, each one for a 40 acre grant.

David Owen's Revolutionary War pension records lists Wesley as a son of David and Winefred Mullins Owen. He is also named as David's son in a letter written on 7 March 1938, by Granville Owens (1866-1941), David's great grandson.

Reportedly, Phoebe never married, however she had two children - Eliza Owens, born in 1847, and Nancy Jane Owens, born in 1858.

Ballard C. "Snippo" Mullins, in his "Recollections," as published in the Mt. Vernon, KY newspaper, "The Signal," by John Lair, stated that John G. "Goodenough" Mullins married Sarah "Sis" Abney, daughter of William Abney, Jr. and Elizabeth Graham. The only marriage I have found for John was to Sarah Elkins first and Nancy Poteet second. According to the marriage record, John was 18 and Sarah Elkins was 14 when they married on 1 January 1856. Sarah died prior to 1879 as John married Nancy Poteet on 26 June 1879.

America was living with her son, Jonathan Taylor Mullins and his family in the 1880 Rockcastle Co., KY census. She was listed as 65 years old.

James accidentally shot and killed his nephew, Walker K. Mullins on 7 May 1898. They apparenetly were looking at a gun that discharged and killed Walker. James was held in jail under a $500.00 bond for several days, but witnesses that were present attested that the shooting was accidental and James was released without charges being filed. Mt. Calloway Mullins owned the Great Saltpetre Cave near Mullins Station in Rockcastle County. During the Civil War, Calloway leased the cave to the United States for mining saltpetre to be used in manufacturing gunpowder. The 1850 Rockcastle Co., KY census says that Calloway and his wife Mary Mullins were married within the year. However the Laurel Co., KY marriage records show they were married 10 October 1836.

In the Rockcastle Co., KY census records, Mary's age fluctuates over the years. In 1850 she is listed as 22. In 1870 she is shown as 40 years old, 49 in 1880 and 67 in 1900.

Both Samuel and Claude were with their grandparents, William C. and Mary Mullins Cummins in the 1880 Rockcastle Co., KY census. Andrew married his first wife's 1st cousin, Elizabeth Owens, in 1883.

Morgan and his wife are shown on the 1820 Rockcastle Co., KY census, their age listed between 16 and 26 years with one son under 10 years old. They are not on the 1830 Rockcastle Co., KY census.

31. REBECCA "BECKY"4 MULLINS (CHAMP/CHAMPNESS3, HENRY2, RICHARD1) was born 1802 in Wilkes Co., NC366, and died February 01, 1875 in Rockcastle Co., KY367. She married ALFRED OWEN Abt. 1830 in Rockcastle Co., KY, son of DAVID OWEN and WINEFRED MULLINS. He was born September 20, 1803 in Wilkes Co., NC368, and died Aft. 1880 in Rockcastle Co., KY369.

Named in a letter written by Granville Owen (1866-1941) on 7 March 1938, as a son of David Owen. He is also listed in the Revolutionary War Pension Records as being David's son.

He married MARGARET "MARY" CATHERINE CABLE Abt. 1826 in Rockcastle Co., KY, daughter of ANTHONY CABLE and MARY MORETZ. She was born Abt. 1806 in North Carolina371, and died November 16, 1854 in Rockcastle Co., KY372.

1850 Rockcastle Co., KY census shows Mordecai 44 years old born in TN. It appears that he is the son of Champ Mullins, however there is no documentation to support this. The 1810 Rockcastle Co., KY census shows Champness Mullins with 3 males under 10 years of age, presumably Morgan, Mordecai and Calloway. Until evidence surfaces to prove otherwise I will leave Mordecai in Champ's family. The 1860 and 1870 Rockcastle Co., KY census shows Mordecai as having been born in Kentucky.

Mary's death date was found in Rockcastle Co., KY vital statistics on microfilm M-216.839. Her parents were listed as Anthony and Barbara Cable.

In the 1830 Rockcastle Co., KY census, Mary is listed as over 20 years old and under 30. This census was taken before the birth of Angeline in September of 1830.

On Nov 24, 1867 he was married to Miss Susie Cummins who survives him. From the Mt. Vernon Signal of 1 July 1898.

Lucinda's parents are not definitely known, however, the evidence available indicates that her parents most likely were Gardner and Hannah Eliza Dennis Mullins. In the 1830 Rockcastle Co., KY census they, are listed with two daughters, five and under ten years of age; and one daughter ten and under fifteen years of age. Since none of the other Mullins brothers had daughters in this category and only one of Gardner's seven children has been identified, I feel confident that Lucinda is Gardner and Hannah's child.
