Femme Fatale

For my mother, Maureen Douglass Sutton

My mother
Femme fatale
In her 50s and 60s
Can still make a
Latino’s heart race.
Hair only slightly dusted with gray
And few wrinkles lining her face
Most assume she’s in her 30s or 40s.

Eccentric as her artist mother
Glows in an old sack dress
With hair too long for her age
And clothes that have a style of their own.

She holds hearts in her hand
Young and old respect her
For she radiates pleasantness
And goodwill from the base of her Texas roots.
Prompting smiles from all
Within reach of her aura.
