The Martyr

based upon the character Tita de le Garza from Laura Esquivel’s novel, Like Water for Chocolate

The hands reach,
The fingers plead;
Searching the sky for the answer.
The crocheted bedspread creates a rainbow
That follows her life.
Each new color symbolizes a different misery or joy.
The matches dry.
The fire is fed.
The flames open the tunnel
From which she came.
