From Whence It Came
For my Mother
For as long as I can remember
It sat, poised on her dresser.
It fascinated me as a child.
How something so soft
Could lie so still,
Yet still seem to breathe life;
Remembering its days
When it was still part of a moving world.
It was the resting spot for her antique dresser set:
Clothes brush, hand mirror, hair brush.
I combed its fur.
Keeping it groomed
For the day when it would leap from the dresser,
Its face a mirror
And its legs brushes,
And hop back into the woods
From whence it came.
