PRIVATE SPINNING AND KNITTING LESSONS
During the summer, private lessons are offered on
Friday mornings or Saturdays when other classes are not scheduled.
Flat hourly rate (please inquire).
Bring as many knitters or spinners as you like up to 8.

KNITTING WORKSHOP:
Your First Circular Sweater: 2nd Thursday evenings: July 10. 5-8 pm. This 4 part workshop will build on principles learned from THE SWEATER WORKSHOP by Jackie Fee. A seamless and circular pullover sweater will be knit over 4 months. Above book ($30.00) and prepayment required. $30/month or $100 for all 4 sessions.

  KNITTING HELP! Saturday, July 19. The Knitting Doctor will be IN from 3-4 pm. Bring your aching projects for a fast fix. First come, first served. Free!

AFTERNOON SPINNERS: a spinning circle for the summer: July 19 (3rd Saturdays) from 4-7 pm. Bring your wheel or drop spindle and enjoy the company of the local spinners who meet monthly to chat and spin. FREE, but please call or e-mail ahead so we have a chair for you.

KNIT A LACE SHAWL: Thursday evenings, July 17 and 31. 5-8pm. Summer knitting at its best, a lacy soft merino wool or kid mohair shawl is perfect for chilly evenings or air-conditioned work spaces and is fine enough to stash in your handbag. A soft shawl makes a perfect baby gift! For those new to lace knitting, these two classes will teach the basics. Topics to be covered are: German twisted cast on, working from written directions and charts; lace decreases and increases; reading your knitting, tips for keeping track and sewn off bind off.

Materials needed: A materials packet with yarn and pattern will be available for purchase at class for $33.00 (merino wool; machine washable) or $43.00 (kid mohair and silk: hand washable).   Preregistration required. $30/week or $50 for both classes.

HANDSPINNING WORKSHOP:
Perfect Plying and Yarn Finishing Using a Spinning Wheel or Drop Spindle, Thursday evening, July 24, 2008.  5-8 PM.  For spinners who have successfully made their first singles yarn, this class focuses on polishing the end result. Summer is the time when county and state fairs accept handspun yarns for competition and display. Learn how to present your yarn well. Yarn finishing is vital in knitting, crocheting and weaving projects. Learn how to preshrink and balance your yarn well. The ASHFORD BOOK OF SPINNING by Anne Field ($27) will be followed. (The book will be available for purchase, but is not required).  A spinning wheel or drop spindle, lazy kate and niddy noddy are required. (Wheels, lazy kate, niddy noddy may be rented for the class for a $20.00 fee: please e-mail or call 828-4554 to reserve your items as soon as you sign up). Preregistration required. $30.

LEARN TO KNIT: A Sampler Scarf: 2 Saturdays, September 6 and 13, 1-4 pm. For those of you who have rarely or never held knitting needles, these two classes will teach you the basics of knitting. Topics to be covered are: casting on, knit stitch, purl stitch, garter stitch, seed stitch, ribbing stitch, cable knitting, joining yarn, casting off. Continental, English or American knitting will be taught with full support for any method. 6 hours of knitting homework will be assigned after the first class. Fee includes classes, wool yarn, instruction booklet with many patterns, bamboo knitting needles, darning needle, gauge ruler, markers, crochet hook, and cable stitch holder. Prepayment required. $84.

LEARN TO SPIN: Sunday, September 7, 1-4 pm. Want to learn how to make yarn? Learn to use a spinning wheel or drop spindle to draft and twist clean wool into a fine yarn. The ASHFORD BOOK OF SPINNING (not required) by Anne Field ($27) will be followed. A spinning wheel or drop spindle is required. Wheels are available for class rental for $10. Spinning wool is included.  Prepayment required. $48.

Rip Van Winkle Nordic Knitting Retreat: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 19, 20 and 21, 2008.  Beautiful simple two-colored two handed knitting techniques are taught at this traditional knitting weekend retreat. Work with Norwegian wool yarn and original Countrywool circularly knit patterns and learn how classic patterns and shapes offer the ultimate in warmth and flexibility. Beginners will enjoy the relaxed pace of knitting just a hat, while more adventurous knitters can start their sweater. Cape Ann Spin & Knit A Mitten Weekend Retreat: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 10, 11 and 12, 2008. Spend Columbus Day weekend spinning a soft and beautiful yarn suitable for knitting mittens from your own wool, llama, dog or alpaca with the additon of Countrywool angora and dyed bits of merino colors. This 3 day retreat takes place right on lovely Long Beach in Gloucester, MA, and the waves will soothe your cares away. Never spun before? Friday night is dedicated to teaching basics, on a wheel or a drop spindle. Sunday is Knit-the-Mitten Day, and  you may sign up just for that. Rip Van Winkle Reversible 2-in-1 Sweater Knitting Retreat
: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 7, 8 and 9, 2008.  Beat the cold this winter with a warm and useful garment. Easy to knit, this is a great first circular sweater for beginning knitters.  Offered in 16 sizes from 6 months to a finished 64"!
