Coat of Arms About the Littlefields Finding People Other Resources

UpCoat of Arms

The coat of arms above was drawn by the daughter of Charles Littlefield Seaman, the publisher of the Littlefield Newsletter.

I have found the same coat and crest in several books including ref. #1, pg. 103; ref. #2, pg. 200; ref. #6, pg. 612: and ref. #8. I do not know who the original coat was bestowed upon, but I intend to eventually find out. As this is the only coat of arms I have found for Littlefield, it is the one that I use.

Blazon for the arms is: Vert on a chevron argent between 3 garbs or as many heads proper with hair gules.

The crest is: On a garb or a bird argent in its beak an ear of wheat vert.

I have also found the crest without the sheaf of wheat.

If you have any additional information on the coat of arms, please contact me.

UpAbout the Littlefield Family

The Littlefield family is one of the oldest families in New England. This line traces back to Edmund of Wells, ME. Edmund came to Boston around 1636. He then went to Exeter, NH with the Reverend John Wheelwright, and was one of the original settlers there. In about 1641, he went to Wells, ME and erected the first permanent structure there. Here is a picture of the plaque erected at the site of his sawmill and a picture of the falls on which he built his sawmill. At one point the Littlefield's owned all of Ogunquit, ME and most of Wells, ME. Unfortunately, none of this land made it down to me. My line removed to Northern, NH after the Revolutionary War, and then moved to Southern NH.

UpHow to Find People On These Pages

This line has been researched back to mid 16th century England. Most of the older entries come from the work of Franklin Littlefield of Kennebunk, ME and Charles Littlefield Seaman of Ogunquit, ME. Both of their works can be found at the Wells - Ogunquit Historical Society in Wells, ME. Some of the early generations are taken from the work of Ruth Bates Littlefield and Marguerite Kernaghad, as presented by A.F. Sterry of Coral Springs, FL. Everything from about 1800 on comes from primary sources, that I have seen myself.

To find individual people

The oldest entry I have is for Edmund's great-grandfather. He can be found here. These first two generations have not been verified.

The most recent entry is here.

There is also an index here.

There is a master index for all the families here.

My Littlefield database is available as either a GEDCOM or as a Family Tree Maker file. A viewer for Family Tree Maker files is available here. This database does not contain any maternal lines, if you want those you must take the database on my Genealogy Home Page.
