Starting in 1973, I have seen the floor covering business progressing in leaps and bounds.
I started as a carpet helper in Buffalo, NY and learned very quickly what I didn't want to do! I'm a shrimp and to bulldog
a 600 pound roll of carpet was not my idea of a good time.
So, how'd I wind up in the Tile and Wood Flooring end?...Well, my boss also did Tile and Wood, but he hated it. So, one
day he showed me how to install 1 row of wall tile around a tub hop and then said....finish it.
I finished it, walked out into the living room and he asked, how much did you get done? I said, go look at it. He was
suprised that I finished it so quickly and he liked it. Next thing out of his mouth was " You're the tile setter now."......And
I have been doing it ever since, after many seminars, workshops, and on the job training.
Since then I have trained scores of future tile and wood floor installers, had retail stores in Florida, spent time in
court testifying as an expert witness for and against my competitors, and paid as a professional floor covering consultant.
Took
2 years off from my own business after the banks crashed and tanked most of us contractors. But, I am back, better than ever,
and with prices for labor at 2002 levels.
