Several of the Cruiser Wrestlers accomplished some outstanding things over the summer.  Here are a few.

Cunningham places 2nd at States!

Congratulation Tommy Cunningham!  At the tournament, Tommy beat 3 very good wrestlers to get into the finals where he was matched up against 3x State Champ, Ryan Lang.  Tommy wrestled a great match in the finals and took 2nd place.  An excellent end to a great season.  His performance along with the other Cruisers at the State tournament helped Groveport to finish 19th in the State for Division I schools.

 

Congratulation Matt Mossor! At the tournament Matt finished with a 2 - 2 record, which places him in the top 8 at States.

The Cruiser District Qualifiers did a great job over the weekend at the District Tournament held at Hilliard Darby.  These wrestlers placed Groveport-Madison Wrestling on the leader board over the weekend.  The team ended up in 7th place overall out of the 40 teams represented.  OUTSTANDING JOB!!!

Wrestling Awards were given out at the Winter Sports Banquet.  Winning awards for the Cruisers were:

 

Tommy Cunningham – 1st Team OCC and Most Valuable OCC Wrestler

Eric Litz  - 2nd Team OCC

Joey McGee – Honorable Mention OCC and Most Improved Wrestler

Matt Mossor – 1st Team OCC

Matt Severance – Most Improved JV Wrestler

Tim Weidner – 2nd Team OCC

After many tries (because of weather), the Sectionals were finally held at Pickerington High School.  The Cruisers

placed 3rd overall as a team following Pickerington and Gahanna.  The rest of the field included Worthington Kilbourne,

West, Chilicothe, Lancaster, Franklin Heights, Delaware Hayes, Independence, and Newark.

Junior Varsity

OCC Match-Up – Reynoldsburg  (2-7)

Cruisers win big over the Raiders   42-26           

The Cruisers win their third OCC match to go 3-2 for the year in the Conference.  Winning for the Cruisers were Dainelle Fout, Shawn Kohler, Matt Mossor, Tommy Cunningham, Tim Weidner, Eric Litz, Ben Trujillo, Garrett Selfinger, and Joey McGee.

Hilliard Darby JV Tournament (2-8)

The following placed for the Cruisers

This was an excellent way to end the season for the JV team.  Go Cruisers!

Cardinal Invitational at Thomas Worthington (2-1)

 

Still depleted, the Cruisers that were healthy competed at the Cardinal Invitational.  Four of the six wrestlers that went placed in the top 3.

Ian Badger – 3rd Place, Matt Mossor – 2nd Place,

Ben Trujillo – 3rd Place and Joey McGee – 1st Place

Newark JV Invitational (2-1)

 

Placing for the Cruisers were:

 

Brad Choina – 1st Place, Brian Harris – 2nd Place,  Ayder Ablyamitoy – 6th Place, Joel Selfinger – 2nd Place, Matt Severance – 2nd Place, and Chris Johnston – 2nd Place

OCC Match-Up – Hilliard Davidson  (1-31)

Crusier’s lose to Davidson              

The flu and injuries take their toll on the Cruisers.  Although most of the matches were well contested, the Cruisers could not pull off the win today against Davidson.  Winning for the Cruisers were Kohler, Mossor, Cunningham, and Trujillo.

Highlight of the evening:

Matt Mossor and Tommy Cunningham both recorded their 100th varsity victory tonight – both by PINS!

 

Thomas Worthington Tournament (1-25)

The JV traveled to the always-tough Thomas Worthington tournament.  Several of the wrestlers were unable to compete due to injuries; however, three of the grapplers were able to go 3-2 in the tournament and place.  These wrestlers were Brad Choina, Matt Ray (all of his wins were by pin) and Matt Severance.  Congratulations to all that competed.

OCC Match-Up Worthington Kilbourne  (1-15)

Winning for the Cruisers were Brian Harris and Matt Severance both by pins.

Cruisers Make Statement at Top GunTop Gun Tournament at Alliance  (1-17)

The Varsity traveled to the Alliance Top Gun 37-team tournament and made their presences felt.  While noted as one of the toughest tournaments in Ohio, the team was able to place a solid 4th place in their first appearance at this tournament in many years. 

 

Individual placers for the Cruisers were:

 

1st Place: Tommy Cunningham with a record of 5-0 in a weight class that featured 2 other state placers besides Tommy.  Four of Tommy’s wins were by falls.

 

2nd Place: Shawn Kohler with a record of 3-1, including a win over Central Ohio rival Gere Jordan of Delaware. 

 

3rd Place:  Matt Mossor with a record of 5-1 in a weight class that featured 2 state placers and another state qualifier. 

 

4th Place:  Joey McGee with a record of 4-2, including a pin over state qualifier Burdette from Claymont.

 

5th Place: Tim Weidner with a record 3-2, including a gutsy win over 17-5 Julian Jones from Warrensville Heights.

St Charles Tournament  (1-18)

The JV competed in the St Charles JV tournament over the weekend.  All Cruisers wrestled hard.  Placing individually for the team was

1st Place :  Matt Ray

4th Place: Matt Severance

5th Place: Brian Harris

 

The JV will be back in action next Saturday at the Thomas Worthington Tournament.

OCC Match-Up with Westerville South  (1-15)

Crusier’s Dominate winning 54-22 over South         

Winning for the Cruisers were Kohler, Mossor, Wood, Traylor, Cunningham, Weidner, Litz, Rowley, Trujillo, and McGee.

OCC Match-Up with Westerville South  (1-15)

Posting wins for the JV squad were Matt Severance, Brad Choina, and Jeff Rosencrance.

Porter Memorial Tournament  (1-11)

 

The Cruisers blew away the competition and bring home a 1st place finish.  The team out scored Hilliard Darby, who finished 2nd, by 52 points.  It was another team effort that made this victory possible.  Every wrestler came home with at least one win.  Eleven out of the twelve wrestlers that went placed in the top four to receive individual awards.   

 

Placing 1st:  Matt Mossor, Tommy Cunningham, Ben Trujillo

and Joey McGee

 

Placing 2nd:  Shawn Kohler and Tim Weidner

 

Placing 3rd: Ian Badger, Greg Traylor, and Eric Emerson

 

Placing 4th:  Eric Litz and Matt Ray

 

Matt Mossor was named MVP of the tournament.

New Lexington Tournament (1-11)

Cruiser JV wrestlers place 5th.

The Cruisers JV wrestlers travel to the New Lexington 14-team tournament.  Several JV wrestlers were able to participate in the varsity tournament, so only five wrestlers made the trip.  Even with so few wrestlers, the team still came away with a solid 5th place.

 Placing individually for the Cruisers were:

Joel Selfinger – 3rd Place

Matt Severance and Jeff Rosencrance – 5th

Brian Harris – 7th

OCC Match-Up with Grove City  (1-9)

Cruisers lose close one to Grove City  30-39         

Without the services of their 103 pounder, the Cruisers still gave Grove City all they could handle.  Several of the matches that were lost by Cruiser wrestlers were very close matches that could have gone either way. 

Highlight of the Evening:  Tommy Cunningham’s return to action after his injury and winning by a pin.

OCC Match-Up with Grove City  (1-9) 

There were only four JV matches that took place tonight.  Although all the matches were hard fought battles, Brad Choina was the only Cruiser to come away with a win. 

The JV team will return to action this upcoming weekend when they travel to New Lexington for a tournament.

Wendy’s Classic (Tiffin 12-28)

Cruisers Take 2nd Place at Wendy’s Classic

 

Without the services of one of the team leaders, Tommy Cunningham (sidelined with an injury), the Cruiser Varsity placed 2nd at the Wendy’s Classic tournament in Tiffin.  This was truly a team effort with all wrestlers winning at least one match contributing to the Cruiser’s showing.

Tri-Meet (12-21)

Vs Huber Heights Wayne – Cruisers win 71-12       

Winning by fall for the Cruisers were Shawn Kohler, Matt Mossor, Ian Badger, Tim Weidner, Eric Emerson, Eric Litz, Joel Selfinger, Ben Trujillo, Matt Ray, and Joey McGee

Highlight of the Day: Danielle Fout (Groveport’s First Female Wrestler) wins 103 pound match by forfeit.

Home Meet (12-21)

Vs Huber Heights Wayne

Recording wins for the Cruisers were Ben Rowley, Matt Severance, and Shawn Davis.

Westland’s Joe Stora Duals (12-14)

Cruisers bring home 3rd Place

Vs Franklin Heights -  Cruisers win  66-13    Highlight of the match- Chris Johnston recording his 1st varsity pin.

 

Vs Mechanicsburg    -  Cruisers win  65-18   Highlight of the match – Jesse Wood records an 8 second pin.

 

 Vs Westland       -  Cruisers lose close one 32-36   Highlight of the match – Eric Emerson’s coming back from behind to pin McKee of Westland.

 

Other notable performances were turned in by Tim Weidner, Eric Emerson, Ben Trujillo, and Matt Mossor all who went undefeated for the day.                                                     

Highland JV Tournament (12-14)

Cruiser JV Wrestlers traveled to Highland High School in Sparta to compete against several other JV teams.  All did a great job!  Congratulations to the following wrestlers who placed in the tournament:

Ian Badger 125  1st Place

Brian Harris   4th Place

Joel Selfinger 4th Place

Matt Ray   1st Place

Madison Comprehensive Tournament

The varsity started the season placing 4th at this 11team tournament.  This was an outstanding start to the season since only 9 wrestlers competed and 7 of the 9 placed. 

Zane-Trace Tournament (12-7)

The JV started the season off at a dual-meet tournament.  Even with only 9 wrestlers, they were able to take 2nd place.  Placing higher that several varsity teams in attendance
