Joining a Reenacting/Living History Organization is a fulfilling and sometimes exhausting experience. Units strive to portray the life and actions of the CW Era soldier as accurately as possible. To start with, attend a reenactment or living history event as a spectator to see what we do, then make the move to join.
When starting, it's best to find an individual within a unit that can answer your questions regarding uniforms, weapons, etc. Most units provide a sponsor and training sessions for new recruits. The cost of reenacting can be expensive. It is best to see exactly what you will need or, borrow equipment if available for your first couple of events to see if reenacting is really for you. And, the best advice for newcomers is to NEVER make a trip to the sutlers for the first time without taking an experienced member along. Don't buy what you don't need and definitely don't pay an outlandish price.
Most units stay active throughout the year, with reenactments, parades, memorial ceremonies, grave dedications and living history events so, there is always the question of time. Most units recognize that this is a hobby and should never come before work or family obligations.
Added to the initial costs of reenacting are the extra costs we incur for "galvanizing" or, in our case, going Blue. This means you need another coat and hat for the Federal Impression. At most events we remain Gray but there are a few times when we will portray Federal troops.
