Puerto Rican Population Characteristics

Over a half million Puerto Rican's have migrated to the mainland U.S. since W.W.II. For the many Puerto Rican's leaving the island, migration is simple; 1. they are full U.S. citizens therefore do need to apply for naturalization, and 2. travel is relatively cheap. Outside of Florida most Puerto Ricans settle in New York. One quarter of Connecticut's Puerto Rican population have migrated from New York. (The Connecticut Experience, 1995)

The island of Puerto Rico is about the size of Connecticut, struggling to support its three and half million inhabitants. It's interesting to note the size of the island and it's climate compared to Connecticut. As Connecticut is part of snowy New England, and Puerto Rico is in the warm Caribbean.
