This is just a basic overview of what the series is about, with as few spoilers as possible, just the relevant information to get the concepts across.
Lost Universe is about the fight between the Darkness of the universe that takes place in the general reality. An ancient civilization produced Lost Ships, scientific life forms, to go to war and destroy each other. Canal's ship Sword Breaker is the only ship that is not "evil". The series starts with Kane Blueriver, Milly, and Canal battle against the Darkness.
Lost Universe is also about the struggle between Light and Darkness in an alternate universe which takes place in the general reality which is the same as The Slayers. Click Here to learn about the Sea of Chaos which connects the universe of The Slayers to Lost Universe. An ancient civilization produced vessels of war, known as Lost Ships to the present civilization. These ships are actually sentient life forms with their only purpose being to go to war and destroy each other. As a power source these ships feed off of the "Psy" Energy of humans, which is the energy humans give off via emotions. Acting as a Master of a Lost Ship only goes on for so long, because some Lost Ships are malicious and enslave their Masters to drain them of their Psy Energy. In the show, Canal's ship Sword Breaker is the only ship which is not "evil," probably because she represents the Light, while Nightmare represents the Darkness. After some early filler episodes in the series to establish characters and such, the plot finally picks up about this battle between Light and Dark, though this fact is never stated outright. Kane Blueriver is on a personal vengeance mission against Nightmare and Stargazer because of the feud between them and his grandmother, whom Kane respects highly. The show progresses as Kane begins to confront these enemies while at the same time facing his own fears of fighting against Nightmare because he feels he is inadequate after losing in an earlier episode to Nightmare in a duel. Nightmare's plans to spread nightmare across the universe caught up with Kane's revenge against Nightmare drives this plot while the story of the Lost Ships provides a depth that would make such a simple sounding plot interesting. And then of course, the supporting characters such as Milly make this show complete, without them Lost Universe would lose all of its magic appeal as comedy and adventure.
