Max slumpped over
a lab table. He was dejected, lost in a world of thought... That
had just hit a wall. Sue and Tammy quietly worked, watching
him stew. It was day five... The Godzilla blood, had been through
every machine in the lab. (This was a task in itself, as
each machine had to be brought into the Radiation room, operated
from the safe room, then decontamitated!) After everything from Spectogaphy,
to blood gas, not to mention, the Electron Microscope, there was
no Mystery Element... But, there was some sort of reaction, taking place.
Sue had enough
bio-data to last for the next ten years. They were comparing
notes on today's biology vs. Paleontology. Every now and then,
they would glance up... Checking to see if Max had improved any.
Tammy couldn't stand watching him go through this struggle... But, this
was the nature of sceince.
"...Are you alright?"
Tammy asked quietly, kneeling beside Max. "...Yeah,.. I'll be fine... I
just need to figure this out, that's all. I know, I'm missing
something..." Sue looked up from her vantage, hearing him speak
again. The first time, in two hours. "...But you can't see something, that's
not there..." Tammy said, trying to ease him. Sue picked up on something...
And started to think on it. "I know,.. Um,.. It's like, when you
lose you house key... You go all around, looking in every place
you can. When all is said, and done,..It's on the kitchen
table... In front of you, the whole time." Max said, again in thought.
" Do you think, we're going about this wrong?" " Max, Tammy,...You might
be on to something, after all!" Sue exlaimed. The two looked
over at her, puzzled. "How do you mean?" Inquired Max. "When is
nothing, something?.." She started... Then, all hell broke lose!
Alarms all over
the base were sounding, as the red warning lamps switched on.
Interrupted, the three looked about with confusion. "This is a Level
Red Emergecy,.. Please evacuate all sensitive areas... This is not a
drill..." Came a the automated voice over the intercom. "... I think,
they mean us..." Max said, with worry. "What the Hell's, level
one?!" Tammy exclaimed. "Sue looked at the other two, equally confused. "Level
One, would mean a catastrophic event!? But it's unheared of!..."
She explained. "Apparently, not any more...Now let's get the hell, outta
here!..." Max replied, with haste.
The three rushed
from the lab, and started down the access hall. (Several of the
research area's, were spread apart from each other... Connected by long
corridors. This was for saftey.) The hall was chaotic... There were
staff members and technicians rushing about, trying to safeguard any
experiments that were currently underway. Above this, a steady reverberation
was getting more noticable... Growing louder with each report. "What
the hell, is that?" Max exclaimed, as the three swept along. "I
don't know,.. But it can't be good!" Sue answered. This place,
like the one in Washington, was mostly underground. Rushing around
the hallways, offered no view of the outside world...
Ahead of them,
a technician was frantically closeing off power lines, and other
hazzardous material transfer points. "What's the deal, Frank?!" Sue asked
the man, working the access panel. "Godzilla's commin'!" He exclaimed. "WHAT?!"
came the respose in unison. "...Coming here??... He was still at Molokai,
this morning..." Max said with confusion. "Yeah well,.. Someone must' uv
woke him up,.. 'Cuz, he's in the harbor now!" Confirmed the technician.
"Shit!" Max exclaimed. "Let's get to the control center!" Sue added.
Murphy and Stanton
were already there, when the others entered. The two looked lost
in dark expression. The oversized wall monitors, now showed a
video feed from the harbor. At present, Godzilla was wading though
water, belly deep... Beside him, was the Arizona Memorial. It was
clear, that no one expected the monster, to make landfall at
Pearl. This was evident, by the look of panic around the
room. Max was struck by another thought, as he and the women,
approached Murphy and Stanton.
"...Looks like we
caught a brake, actually..." Max said, after seeing the room. Murphy
looked at him, like he had two heads. "How do you figure,
that?!" Murphy barked. "with all the places, for him to come up,...
We got guns, here!" He reasoned. "That's only half the problem, Max!"
Stanton interrupted. The three looked at him, waiting for the
other half. "...I just got off the horn, with the guys
over at Molokai.... They tell me, our lizard ain't budged all
day! He's still down for the count! Look over there!" Stanton
explained, pointing to another monitor. The three looked over to
where Stanton had directed... Godzilla was still sprawled across the
landscape. Now, came several double takes. "...Oohhhhh, Ssshiiit!" exclaimed
Sue... With what little breath she had left, after the shock set
in. "...Yeah... Only squared!" Max managed. "...If there's two of them?!...
How many more??!" Tammy realized.

The newly
arrived, Godzilla was nearing the docks... It was met by all types
of gun fire. Several of the birthed ships, were joined in this
assault. With FedTech's location near the base, The ground was shaking
with every foot-fall. This was the mysterious reverberation felt earlier.
This was irony... Max thought. FendTech's target, had come to them...
Only now, there was TWO of them! Stanton had a phone
plugged in one ear, quickly moving from one read-out, to another.
"I want those RadAb missiles, ready to go, A.S.A.P! You got
that? On those ships, in 10 minutes, or else!" He said, watching
the monster's progress. "What's the deal with the choppers?" He shot
towards Murphy, who was on his own cell phone. "They just
got airborn! We should see 'em, in a few seconds!" He replied.
Sure enough, several helicopters now entered the video feed... Starting
attack runs against the reptillian visitor.
Max and the
two women, stood by, watching the video feeds... He felt useless...
and, at present, worthless... Still angry with his lack of explaination.
He couldn't figure out, how one of these animals survived... Now,
the delima had multiplied. "What do you want us to do, John?"
He asked, respecting Stanton's propper name, for the first time. Hearing
this, Stanton turned. "...I need the three of you, to watch
over sleeping ugly... If he, so much as twitch's, You holler
out! Got it?" "We're there!" Max complied.
The three sat in
a monitor alcove, near the back of the control center. From
here, they could pipe all the vtal information comming from Molokai.
They could also, hear themselves think... This was even better. "...It
doesn't seem likely, that one bomb could wake up two, or
more of these animals... " Tammy thought out loud, watching her read-outs.
"...Each one would, have to be in the same condition... And that
dosen't happen in Paleontology!" She finished. "...I agree... The odds against
it, are way too high. The only other answer, would be a
group of living animals." Sue said. "What, like deep ocean squid??"
Max inquired. "Yeah, sort of..." Sue replied.
"... These two,
were mutated by the test bomb. Their Metabolism's in overdrive... That's
why they're so big." Sue informed. "That's one of the things, the
bloodwork did tell us..." Added Tammy. "That's great,.. But
we're still missing the 'why!'... How did they get this way??
By what process?!" Max steamed,.. Looking away from the women. Again,
he felt like a weak link... The video image wasn't any help.
The second Godzilla,
had made landfall... It was huge, standing taller then most of
the stuctures on the base. The military was still fighting to
repell the beast. Max could see tiny figures, swarming around the
monster, as it walked along. He also saw many of them, crushed
under the giant's feet, or flung aside by the whip of
it's tail. These were human beings, being brushed off like so
may ants... Cars, trucks and other military vehicals were being tossed
about like model railroad toys. There were explosions, and fire...Many
people ran, covered in sheets of flame. The helicopters, Murphy had
dispatched, wern't fairing any better... They continued to fire on the
angered monster, with little effect. Every now and then, an advetuous
pilot would get too close,.. And be taken from the air. Max
saw this happen. A damaged chopper fell down in a ball
of flame... on top of several men. This was horrifying... And there
was nothing, Max could do, except watch. " ... Forget everything I
said about Tokyo... I'm a idiot..." He muttered.
"You're not
an idiot, Max... Just a scientist." Tammy said. She had been watching
with him. Standing quietly by, in case he wanted to talk
again. "... And I can't even do that right, these days..." He
sighed. "Uncle Serizowa's invention, didn't stop him, either!" Tammy said, looking
deeply into his eyes. "At this point, I wish we had another
one, we could test!" Max replied in frustration. "How do we know,
The Oxygen Destroyer didn't work? Godzilla never came back, after
they used it!" Sue said. "Until now, that is." Max said. "...Yes,
but here...Not Japan!" Sue pointed out.
On the
vid screen, things became strangely quiet... Godzilla the second, was
standing silently. It no longer vocalized in thundeous roars. The
military deffensive, seemed decimated... The shelling had stopped, as did
the endless sound of gunfire. It was this lack of noise, that
had caught everyone's attention. "...What the hell, is this?!" Stanton
bellowed at the monster on the screen,.. As if expecting it to
answer. The animal seemed to be examining, it's own handywork. Max and
the others, were watching from their position. "...It seems to
be, looking for something..." Sue finally said. " Like the other one,
maybe?" Tammy replied. The three looked at each other, then quickly
to their monitors. The readings were changing... All the vital signs,
seemed to grow more active. The Molokai monster, was waking up...
