Vash is an an archaeologist and an adventurer whom Captain Jean-Luc Picard first met on the resort planet Risa in 2366. A beautiful human female, Vash had been an assistant to scientist Doctor Samuel Estragon during his search for the fabled Tox Uthat. She used his notes after his in 2366 to locate the Uthat, which was buried on the resort planet of Risa. Vash’s competitors in the search included Doctor Estragon's former associate, a Ferengi named Sovak and two Vorgon criminals from the Future. Captain Picard was taking a much needed vacation on Risa when he met Vash (Captain’s Holiday). She manipulated him into assisting with the quest, and later destroyed to Tox Uthat. Vash and Jean-Luc Picard enjoyed a short romantic involvement and parted as friends, despite that destruction of the Tox Uthat. She later came aboard the USS Enterprise as a member of the Federation Archaeology Council to attend a symposium hosted by Captain Picard in 2367 (Q-pid). Q abducted her, Captain Picard, and several USS Enterprise personnel, and cast them all into an elaborate re-creation of ancient Robin Hood legends. Vash, ever looking for adventure and profit, later agreed to join Q in exploring unknown parts of the galaxy. She and Q explored the Gamma Quadrant for two years together, but she eventually left him to explore on her own. The runabout Ganges discovered Vash in the Gamma Quadrant in 2369 and brought her to Deep Space 9, along with several artifacts she collected during her travels. Vash attempted to raise money by auctioning some of her treasures at Quark's bar, but one of the artifacts contained a life-form from the Gamma Quadrant, and generated a graviton field that nearly destroyed the station. Vash had been away from Earth for twelve years by this time and was tempted to accept an invitation from the Daystrom Institute to speak on her travels. She ultimately declined in favor of further adventure.
