Way back in 1993 I was introduced to the sound of Bon Jovi, a late starter as far as being a fan is concerened. I admit that Keep THe Faith hit me like a slap in the face.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!! What a sound. The voice and woaaaaaahhhhhhh that guitar. WHO IS IT? I asked myself. I had never heard of this Richie Sambora person before, all I knew was that guitar made me go weak at the knees.
July 1993 I was presented witha ticket to go see the band at Milton Keynes Bowl. I was so excited. The big day came we left home at 6am to start the drive down south from way up in the north of England.
We met up with the rest of the people who we knew and made our way to the Bowl. I was so hyper the reason being there was a fantastic support line up too.
The Manic Street Preachers fairly unknown in those days were as awesome as we expected them to be. Followed by The Little Angels the whole place was rocking to them what a fantastic sound they had.
Then came the moment a lot had been waiting for Billy Idol, I myself had liked this guy since the days of Generation X, what a complete and utter let down he was. totally and utterly crap live.
A long break during which a helicopter flying over the arena looking up as it flew lower than ever OH MY GOD it was them. All of them were hanging out of the helicopter waving to the crowd, the screams were unbelievable.
Within 10 minutes of it landing the drum beat started the atmosphere was so electrically charged. Then there they were Jon in all his splendour on the mic singing his head off. I couldnt get over how handsome he looked.
Part way through the song the guitar solo I swung my head to the left of the stage............THAT IS RICHIE SAMBORA OH MY GOD I DIED AND WENT TO HEAVEN. Up until then I had always raved about Jon being so sexy to look at,
but here in front of me was the sexiest guy I had ever seen in my whole life.
From that moment on I couldnt keep my eyes off him, this guy had captured the lust in my body.
The first opportunity I got I went out and ordered his solo album "Stranger In This Town" I listened to it non stop for weeks and still rate it as one of the best albums in my collection.
I longed to see more of him taping every video seen on tv of the band and buying every album they released too. I raved on continuously about him. Sheeeeesh anyone would think I was in love.
A couple of years passed my desire for this guy never faltering, then I hear the band are touring again off I went and bought tickets treasuring them dearly. Two months later with only 6 weeks to go til the date The army
decided we were to be posted, I was devastated we were to be posted to Cyprus 2500 miles from the UK we couldnt go to the gig. I cried buckets I was desperately disappointed. Why oh why is life so unfair.
Jon released his album Destination Anywhere, rumours were flying all over the newsgroups that Richie was to release another solo album at long last, then it was delayed. This was worse than hell. Finally we get a release date
I ordered the album through a local store. YES IT WAS MORE THAN WE COULD HAVE HOPED FOR. Elated and totally devoted to his new album.
The elation didnt last long though, tour dates were announced. He was playing Shepherd Bush in London (SOB SOB) further down the list I almost died of a broken heart there was a date for Manchester (my home town). Where are we still in Cyprus
I was yet again dropped from a great height like a stone. I felt crushed inside, yet again I was not to see him play. What made it worse is the fact that these were small venue dates, with more chance of getting to meet him too.
My quest to see him play again still continues and if I get to meet him too well what a bonus that will be.
