Women's Rights and Economic Change Manager

Background

The Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) is an international membership organization connecting, informing and mobilizing people and organizations committed to achieving gender equality, sustainable development and women's human rights. Our goal is to cause policy, institutional and individual change that will improve the lives of women and girls everywhere.

We do this by facilitating ongoing debates on fundamental and provocative issues as well as by building the individual and organizational capacities of those working for women's empowerment and social justice.

A dynamic network of women and men around the world, AWID members are researchers, academics, students, educators, activists, business people, policy-makers, development practitioners, funders, and more. AWID recognizes that our members are our most valuable resource. We have a broad network of expert, committed members interested in sharing their ideas towards viable solutions for gender equality.

Building on the successes of our huge International Forum in November 1999, AWID is set to expand its reach and impact through an innovative strategic communications program. In a world of information overload, we intend to share the most strategic and practical information on fundamental questions in our work towards social justice and women's rights. Using a mix of interactive e-mail and web-based communications, as well as print publications, we want to share ideas, resources, opinions, theories and strategies that put new issues on the development and human rights agenda, improve our individual and collective capacities, and influence policies.

Women's Rights and Economic Change Manager

The purpose of this position is to direct the new Women's Rights and Economic Change "theme program" as part of AWID's new Strategic Communications Program. The intended impact of the Strategic Communications Program is the improvement of women's lives through information exchange that will motivate action, support knowledge - building, and influence policy. As a theme manager you will be one of the key facilitators of this information exchange.  In particular, your responsibility will be to manage the program dedicated to promoting the rights of women and girls in the context of globalization. The program intends to influence and engage feminist economists, international development practitioners, policy makers and women's human rights advocates in order to forge common strategies and approaches that lead to policy and institutional change. You will work to bring together the networks and practitioners that are working on economic justice initiatives and those focusing on human rights. These two significant communities each have important knowledge, analysis and experience, although it has often been difficult for them to work together. By developing common or complimentary approaches, tools, knowledge and/or actions we will be better able to address the profound global changes resulting from trade and investment liberalization and their effects on the lives of women.

As the theme manager of this program you will from, and living in, the Global South. You will work from your region, connecting to AWID's Toronto Secretariat electronically and through semi-annual meetings.
