Society for Disability Studies
Welcome!
The Society for Disability Studies is a nonprofit scientific and
educational organization established to promote interdisciplinary
research on humanistic and social scientific aspects of disability and
chronic illness. Its membership includes social scientists, scholars in
the humanities and disability rights advocates concerned with the
problems of disabled people in society. The purpose of the society is
to bring together people from diverse backgrounds and substantive
concerns. The Society is committed to developing theoretical and
practical knowledge about disability and to promoting the full and
equal participation of persons with disabilities in society.

Please read this before you e-mail the SDS Office:
Given the range of legal, medical, employment, and
other kinds of questions potentially raised by people with
disabilities seeking answers (e.g., "Where is a good support
group/lawyer/doctor in my area for __?" "Is __ legal?" "How can I work
from home?"), these questions are usually better directed to resources
specifically focused on the disability-related issue in question than
to SDS.
If you have a question or issue but don't know where
to direct it, please check your local telephone listings, or search
the web for the appropriate resources. The best use of our e-mail
contacts is to send questions or comments concerning SDS itself,
disability studies as a field, or this web site.
E-mail Carol Gill with
general questions
about the organization. Thanks to Debra Sheets for her assistance in
developing several pages in this site.
